Whitehaven - Tuesday April 8, - 1777.
We hear that William Dacre Esq. has presented the Rev. Mr. Pattinson to the perpetual Curacy of Kirklinton in this county; and the Rev. Mr. Fearon of Isell succeeds him as the Usher to the Rev. Mr. James in the school at Arthuret.
Friday last, the Rev. Mr. Jameson was inducted to the Rectory of Egremont.
We are credibly informed, that in the course of the ensuing summer, a whole town, in this County, will be rebuilt, or such improvements made as will give it the appearance of a new town. It is the sole property of a gentleman whose laudable attention to his extensive concerns has, within these few years, produced such a change as raises the admiration of every person who sees them.
There follows an extensive description of a giant Aloe plant belonging to be found in the Duke of Marlborough’s gardens that was 36 feet in circumference.
On Tuesday and Wednesday the 25th and 26th past, in York, the heat was so extraordinary for this season of the year, that Farenhaut’s Thermometer in the Northern Exposure, and in the shade, was at 66, which is two degrees above the usual estimation of summer’s heat.
In Tuesday’s Gazette the Lords of the Admiralty give notice, that they are ready to issue commissions to private ships, for cruising against the Americans.
Last week a ferry boat with 14 people overset in the river near Liverpool, 5 of whom were drowned.
A letter from Antigua, dated 10th of January last, says, “There is a very poor prospect of a crop of sugars, that they don’t expect one third of a crop; and that about there they swarm with large [numbers of] privateers.”
It was Capt. Douglas of the Isis who was tried the 3 ult. at Portsmouth; he was acquitted.
Wednesday last Mr. Robert Benson was appointed master Of the Lynx Cruiser in the service of this Customs house in the room of Mr. Daniel Fearon.
The report of the Seaman’s Protections being broke through, as mentioned in some of the papers, was without foundation.
The Eagle Pacquet, Capt. Maxwell, arrive this morning from the Isle of Mann, and was sent out again immediately.
A letter from London says “The goods shipped for Quebec are said to amount to above £600,000,
[ which today would be £83,172,000] which they say, will greatly over-stock the market”
Wednesday last a labouring man in this town was carried before a magistrate and examined concerning the following. He had given out, that a few days ago he had found something of a fleshy substance buried amongst some lime in Duke Street, -- that he threw it into one of the conduits, and had since persuaded himself that it was the body of a child. People were immediately dispatched to examine the conduit, but finding nothing like what the fellow described, he was dismissed.
We hear from Appleby, that a few days ago Mrs Wilkinson of the new Gaol there, fell into the fire, with her neck upon the uppermost bar: in this shocking situation she was found with her neck almost burnt through.
The three men committed to Carlisle gaol, on a suspicion of murdering John Little of Workington, are removed to London, by a writ of Habeas Corpus, to be hailed.
We hear from Workington that on Tuesday last the annual football match was played there, which was maintained with great vigour for about two hours, afforded much diversion to a wall of spectators; victory at length determined in favour of the upper-town, after which there was a foot-race, wrestling, and other athletic amusements.
A few days ago one of Sir James Lowther’s smithies was broke into, and a number of horse shoes taken away.
Esther Carlisle and her companion Isabell Spencer, are removed to Carlisle gaol.
We hear from Derby that last week the roof of a new built Methodist meeting-house fell in, about half an hour before the people were to assemble in it.
