Thank you, Dorothy, very interesting.
Kim (the list owner) did forward your message to the list a week ago, as for
some reason it had bounced.

Subject: [list-cumbria] Whitehaven Pacquet March 18 1777
Hi List (and Petra)
I've been trying to send this response to a post from Neville since last
week. I really hope it goes through this time.....
Neville's post read:
We hear that the Rev. Mr. Bacon, formerly of St. Bees School, is appointed
to the Curacy of Merrington in the county of Durham, in the room of the Rev,
Mr. Carter, formerly of Blindcrake near Cockermouth, removed to the curacy
of Worksop in Nottinghamshire.
The Reverend John BACON (1754-1827) married in 1780 to Anne KITCHING
(1759-1790) was my 5xgt grandfather. Interesting to note that his
appointment was reported in the newspaper before it actually happened. The
below-mentioned Margaret McCallum provided me with a wealth of papers
documenting the Reverend Bacon's career, and I recommend them to any
researchers who are lucky enough to find a clergy in their family.
Biographical information from email of Margaret McCallum, Durham University
Sept 2009, from Biographical Card Index of northern clergy compiled by Roy
Hudleston.
Further information from Ms McMcCallum: His ordination papers as priest
(SSR/EA/CLO/3/1/1778/10) - four sheets, are held at Durham Universtiy, .
These include a copy of his baptismal certificate at Harrington, and his
nomination by James Smith, vicar of Merrington, as his curate at Merrington
at a salary of 10 pounds a year, on 2 August 1778.
