Additions/corrections from a better filming on BNA website:

A correspondent informs us that a few days ago as a number of young men were playing at football near Bassenthwaite Chapel, two of them met with such violence, that one of them had his leg broken, and the other was so much bruised that he was obliged to be carried home. We are sorry to observe that this happened on a Sunday afternoon.

Our correspondent at Carlisle observes, that a scene of the most complicated villainy has been carried on for some time past, in the house and shop of Mr. FORSTER, of that city, ever known. Scarce an article of household furniture, wearing apparel, victuals and liquor, but a part has been stolen; a large quantity of ready drest lint is missing; and since the commitment of Elizabeth Dobson, (mentioned before) two other women have been apprehended and secured, as being accomplices.

Whitehaven - March 13, - 1777.

The Lords of the Treasury have been pleased to appoint Fawcett Troughton Esq. of the town, one of the Tide Surveyors of the Port of Whitehaven, in the room of Joseph Deane Esq. lately resigned.

Thursday morning the body of Elizabeth Waller, said to belong to Kendal or some place near it, was found within the high water mark, near the old fort in this harbour. A coroner’s inquest sat upon it, and brought in their verdict, Accidental Death, supposed by drowning. This unfortunate young woman is said to be about 21 years of age, of creditable parents, was well dressed, and care was taken to have her decently interred:- as is common in such melancholy cases, where no certainty can come as to the cause of death, many reports have been spread, all of them conjectures which do not, on examination, appear to merit the least regard.

Sunday afternoon the body of a female child, apparently not more than two days old, was found upon the sand near Bransty; it was taken to the Workhouse, where a jury was summoned the next day, who found a verdict of Wilful Murder. – A suspicion falling upon one Esther Carlisle, a single woman, she was examined by some of the faculty, and being carried before a Magistrate was committed to Carlisle Gaol, along with Elizabeth Spencer, (an old woman with whom she lodged in John’s Lane) in order to take their trials at the next assizes, for committing the horrid and most unnatural crime of murder upon the body of an infant.

Capt. Hugh Robinson, formerly of Appleby, is appointed to the Command of his Majesty’s Ship Portius of 20 Guns.

Mr. Milham Ponsonby, son of Mr. John Ponsonby of Workington, is promoted to a Lieu tenancy in the Navy, and appointed to the Portius.

The Rev. Mr. Kendal, master of the Free Grammer School in Kendal, is presented by the Rev. Dr. Symonds, Vicar of Kendal, to the Chapel of Netland, void by the death of the Rev. Mr. Townson, the last Incumbent there.

The Bellona, Capt. Barra’s, sailed from Douglas IOM last Friday, on a voyage to the West Indies.

The Easterly winds, which came on here a few days ago, have proved favourable to a great number of outward bound ships; sixty four sail have left this port, since our last.

Saturday se’nnight the lady of William Douglas Esq., member of Parliament for Dumfries, was safely delivered of a son at Arkelby Hall, near Cockermouth.

House of Commons Friday 7th March: “The report from the Committee appointed to take into consideration the petition of the inhabitants of the town of Workington in Cumberland, for a Bill for the improvement, widening, deepening and enlarging the harbour of the said town, was received, and a bill ordered to be brought in pursuant to the prayer of the said petition.”
A correspondent informs us that a few days ago as a number of young men were playing at boot ball near Bassenthwaite Chapel, two of them met with such violence, that one of them had his leg broken, and the other was so much bruised that he was obliged to be carried home. We are assured that Mr.Bell, whose death at Carlisle was mentioned in our last, did not receive more than 8s. from the parish, and that was given to him by the kind attention of a very worthy gentleman in that place, during the absence of Mr. Bell’s son, who defrayed the expence of the funeral etc.
