Hi Robert, I assume you’ve got the information on the Salkelds in Cumberland Families and Heraldry? It mentions George Salkeld of Rosgill and Thrimby (d 1597) who I guess may be the father you’re looking at. But no daughters of his, only his son Thomas (1567-1639). Sorry if that’s nothing new.
The name Salkeld rings a bell from Williamson genealogy – their Visitation Pedigrees suggest that there was a John Salkeld of ‘Pradsey’ (Pardshaw, I think) and/or ‘Corkby’ (Corby?) who also owned the manor of ‘Mosargh’ (Mosser, next to Pardshaw?), married Katherine, daughter of Sir Christopher Curwen, had children Thomas and Alice, and died by 1543. If you’ve researched Salkelds in the 1500s, do you have any idea where he would connect?
Thomas seems to have died childless, probably by 1548, and Alice married (probably mid 1530s) John Williamson of New Hall, Keswick/Crosthwaite. They had several children but she seems to have died by 1550ish – he remarried, had three children with his second wife, and died 1558.
The Williamson pedigree in the Oxford visitation looks to give arms that Alice Salkeld was heiress to as: Per pale Argent and Vert, three bull’s faces cabossed Gules - not Vert fretty Argent or similar as Cumberland Families and Heraldry gives for Salkeld. Do you know any Salkelds who used the bull’s faces?
Many thanks if you can shed any light, and best wishes,
Ian Williamson

Subject: [list-cumbria] Joseph Thwaites of Unerigg (dead by 1627)
According to two different historical sources (Edmund SANDFORD & one other), the above-mentioned was married to a daughter of George SALKELD of Corby & Rosgill - hence my interest.
However, of the three of George Salkeld's daughters known to me, Dorothy married William THOMPSON, Jane married Richard NOBLE (these two on the same day in 1591 at Shap) and Mary married Hugh DACRE.
It is possible that any one of these three could have been widowed and then to have married Joseph, although Mary is the least likely of the trio because Hugh DACRE died in 1623 and Joseph THWAITES was dead by 1627, which was the year that his son John THWAITES sold Unerigg to the BARWIS family.
is there anybody with detailed knowledge of the life and family of the above-mentioned Joseph THWAITES (besides what has been written about him by Edmund SANDFORD) who could assist me in this matter?
Robert E. Salkeld
