Whitehaven - July 6 - 1775.

An instance of the forwardness of the season, in this part of the Kingdom, we can assure our readers that part of a field of barley, on the estate of Humphrey Senhouse, Esq. at Nether-hall, was reaped on Thursday last; oats at the same place were just turning, and both wheat and rye will be cut in a few days.

[ There follows similar reports from Ulverston & Cartmel-in-Furness.]

A good deal of the hay about Kendal was got in a week ago, but for want of rain, it is supposed the crops in general will be thinner than last years.

Friday last was brought into this town, the first load of new hay this season.

We hear from Cock-Banton, nigh Carlisle, that on Saturday se’nnight, there fell at that place an excessive heavy shower of hail which continued for a few minutes.

Monday last a boy fell from the top-mast head of a vessel lying in this harbour, by which accident on of his legs and a thigh were broken

Sunday morning last, His Majesty’s Cutter, the Ferret, Capt. Daune, arrived here from Cruize.

An Irishman who came lately from Kendal over Hardknot and Wrynose [mountain passes travelling from east to west], was complaining the other day of the badness of that road; “but (continued he) it will be better, for I saw a great many people at work, repairing it, lying fast asleep at their dinners.

Yesterday morning arrived here, the Mally, Capt. Mitchinson, in 26 days from Norfolk in Virginia. She sailed from hence the 6th April, with goods, and on her arrival at Norfolk, was not permitted to land them: the committee were called, and expresses sent to Alexandria, where congress was sitting, The Captain was seized, and with much difficulty and solicitations escaped ‘a tars and feathers’

One of the Merchants, who resides at Norfolk, requested that the vessel might proceed with her cargo to Quebec, which was refused; nor would the committee suffer it to be transhipped into another vessel belonging to the company, then loading for Whitehaven; nor allow the Malley to take the tobacco which was prepared for her; but compelled the merchant to send the cargo back in the same bottom, without diminution or addition, to be landed at Whitehaven; for the performance of which they obliged him to give a bond of £3,000 – [that is £407,000 today]. Before this was settled, expresses passed and re-passed between the committee and the congress, and the Captain received a variety of orders in the course of a few hours. Everything appeared to be in the greatest confusion amongst them, and had a strong appearance of adhering resolutely to the steps they have taken.

The Jenny, Capt. Welch, sailed at the same time with the Malley, and is expected here in a about a fortnight.

Capt. Mitchinson spoke to a schooner from Salem, bound for London, on Sunday last and enquired – “What news from Salem”? To which the captain of the schooner replied, “They are fighting every day”

[Then follows a large section on recent events taking place in New York and elsewhere on the East coast.

Then follows a section on a Carlisle Corporation Court case at the York Assizes concerning the Toll - called the Shire Toll; hardly local news]

MARRIED

In Whitehaven a few days ago, Mr. Head, carpenter, to Mrs Head of Tangier [Street?]

At Kendal last week, Mr. James Monkhouse of Hesket-in-the-Forest, to Miss Cicily Bridge of Stavely in Yorkshire, a young lady with a genteel fortune.

Tuesday last, at Gosforth, the Rev. Mr. Church, Rector of that place, to Miss Benn of Hensingham.

05.07.1775 Charles Cobbe Church of Gosforth, rector & Isabella Benn of Bassenthwaite at Bassenthwaite church. .
