A few days ago, whilst a person named BROWN was driving a fat cow to Whitehaven market, the animal became furious, and ran at every
person who came in her way; but until her arrival at Moresby, if we except the driver, who had been severely butted by her, she had
not injured any person: at this place a child of the name of STEEL, who was playing on the side of the road, was thrown down and
much bruised about the head. The child's sister, who saw the attack of the furious animal, immediately ran to its rescue; but the
cow no sooner saw this than she gave chase to her assailant; the girl however in her flight took up a mason's pick, which she threw
at her pursuer, and it very fortunately alighted on the pit of her neck, the point of which penetrated to the spinal marrow, and the
animal instantly fell; thus, in an almost miraculous manner, rescuing both herself and sister from the fury of so dangerous an
assailant.Cumb. Pacquet.
Last week, while the workmen were employed in pulling down the old chapel in Borrowdale, they discovered a freestone with 1125, cut
upon it in very legible characters, which, no doubt, indicate the year the building was erected. The same stone also contains an
inscription, but in consequence of several of the letters being effaced it has not yet been deciphered.

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT KENDAL.Extract of a letter, dated Kendal, April 15:"One of the most fearful occurrences has taken place in
this town that has for many years happened in Westmorland. The large new woollen mill, belonging to Messrs. GANDY & Sons, Kendal,
was completely burnt down on Wednesday night. The fire was first discovered about half-past eight o'clock. The engines and manual
assistance were obtained with all possible speed, but every effort proved ineffectual. The flames continued to rage with great
violence till about one on Thursday morning, when the combustible materials on the premises being in a great degree exhausted, the
power of the flames declined; but they were not got under till four o'clock. The fire attained its most awful pitch about midnight;
the whole vale was literally illuminated; the reflection, from the clearness of the night, must have been seen at an immense
distance. Many thousands witnessed the terrific scene; and as the multitude lent the most prompt aid in saving the manufactured
goods which were in the ware-rooms, a considerable quantity was rescued from the devouring element. No part of the property or
premises was insured. The loss is differently estimated; some say £15,000, others £25,000; it may, perhaps, be rather within
£20,000. The mill was very large, nearly new, and the machinery of the best kindand the whole is destroyed, as well as an amazing
stock of wool. The firm is very rich, and can well bear the loss; but a great many work-people are for the present unfortunately
thrown out of employment. It is satisfactory to state, that, although the crowd was immense, and the exertion to save the property
great, no accident occurred."
The late Right Hon. Mary Dowager Countess of Lonsdale, was the daughter of John STUART, Earl of Bute, by Lady Mary WORTLEY MONTAGUE,
grand-daughter of Evelyn first duke of Kingston, and was married to the late Earl of Lonsdale, then Sir James LOWTHER, in the month
of September 1761.
On Wednesday last, at Appleby, various seizures were made of illegal fishing nets in the houses of individuals who for several years
have carried on midnight depredations in the river Eden, and neighbouring small rivers, to the utter disappointment of the patient
angler. Indeed to such an extent has this trade been carried on, that the Eden trout have been drained so as to be regularly hawked
throughout the country to a considerable distance. A traveller at Greta Bridge, in Yorkshire, enquired, the other day, what river
the fish he had just dined off were caught in; the answer was, "they are sent from Appleby, from whence we have a regular supply."
Nor are those in whose possession the nets in question were found the only or the most extensive dealers; a neighbouring miller has
in one week sent to Appleby for sale three cargoes of trout of 50lb. each, and this repeatedly. There is an anecdote related by
FRANKLIN of a man who sat underneath a bridge in Philadelphia the whole dayin the evening he was asked if he had caught any thing;
"No," says the man, "but I have had a most glorious nibble." Such, no doubt, has often been the case with the Eden angler. It is to
be hoped, however, that the practice of these netting marauders will eventually be put to an end.
