Yes it still exists, sometimes. It is actually a  floating mass of vegetable
matter which is submerged most of the time and occasionally rises above the
water, some say buoyed up by methane produced by this decaying matter others
say it appears when the lake is high and water is pouring into Derwentwater
and somehow the water current inflates the island like a balloon and cause
it to float.  It is only about 20 metres in diameter. Located in the SE
corner of  Derwent Water just by where the River Derwent enters. It seems in
the 19th Century it appeared quite frequently, but does not appear so
frequently now.

I was intrigued to read about the floating island on Derwent Lake, does
anybody know anything about it and does it still exist?
