One further thought - perhaps the wedding couldn't be postponed because Hugo had a ship to catch?
There was a Hugo James who was a doctor in Jamaica during the last quarter of the eighteenth century. This Hugo was son of William James and his wife Jane, nee Senhouse who married on 23-Dec-1742 at Bridekirk, which is nor far from Maryport. There is a James family tree on JamaicanFamilySearch.com which indicates that the name of Hugo's first wife is unknown.
This is just speculation, but perhaps Jane Senhouse was related to the Senhouses who founded Maryport, and this is how Hugo and Molly met?
