One further thought - perhaps the wedding couldn't be postponed because Hugo had a ship to catch?

There was a Hugo James who was a doctor in Jamaica during the last quarter of the eighteenth century.  This Hugo was son of William James and his wife Jane, nee Senhouse who married on 23-Dec-1742 at Bridekirk, which is nor far from Maryport.  There is a James family tree on JamaicanFamilySearch.com which indicates that the name of Hugo's first wife is unknown.

This is just speculation, but perhaps Jane Senhouse was related to the Senhouses who founded Maryport, and this is how Hugo and Molly met?

I don't have any proof that it was Molly's mother that was buried on the same day as the wedding, but I haven't found any Postlethwaites living in Crosscanonby/Ellenfoot/Maryport in the 18th century who aren't part of the families of James or his brother William.  Perhaps Hugh and Molly's marriage was arranged (banns read or licence obtained), Mary dies just before the date, and they decide to continue with the ceremony, possibly in accordance with Mary's deathbed wish?

The answer may be in the next edition of the Cumberland Packet.

Getting married on the same day on which your mother is buried? You wouldn't do that today, and you certainly wouldn't have done that in the 1700s. That would have been an outrage.

Looking at FamilySearch, you are right, both events were on the same day. Are you sure the burial is for the right Mary POSTLETHWAITE? I must admit though that I couldn't see another burial for a suitable Mary POSTLETHWAITE in Cumberland.

Very strange.

Hi Petra,

I think that Mary, widow of James Postlethwaite, was buried at Crosscanonby on 5th October 1775.  This is the same date as her daughter Molly's marriage to Hugh James, so an awful coincidence.  (I think mother Mary's maiden name was Stockdale who married at Broughton-in-Furness on 7th May 1741).

I would be surprised if the will of James wasn't well known to the family.  Both daughters Mary (Molly) and Agnes (wife of John Inman), were bequeathed the houses they each lived in, together with £400.  Younger son William was to get the estate at Dalton after his mother's Mary's death.  I guess it is possible that this all happened well before the Admon bond was signed, as otherwise, why didn't they put pressure on Thomas to get the Admon Bond signed?

According to the Admon Bonds, James left £600 and son Thomas £2000.

Thanks for the interesting details!

A thought about the late probate (or rather administration): Maybe everybody in the family assumed that James left everything to his widow. When Mary died, the children when clearing out their mother's house found the will which had never been proved. So Thomas, as the named executor, got it done at that point.

Do you know when Mary died? If it was in 1794 then my above theory would be a viable explanation.

I have a copy of the will and Admon bond for father James.  The will is dated 1st May 1774 with the sole executor being his elder son Thomas,  The Admon bond wasn't granted to Thomas  until 23rd June 1794 though.

I haven't found a burial for James yet.  Originally I was looking in the early 1790s, but the marriage announcement suggests he died soon after he signed his will - in 1774 or 1775.

James left the income from an estate at Dalton-in-Furness to support his widow, Mary.  I think he (and a brother William, who also lived in Maryport) moved up from Furness around 1750 - but have no idea who their parents were.

Son Thomas died at Maryport in 1799, a bachelor.  I think he may have been the Thomas Postlethwaite who was MP for the pocket borough of Halesmere in Surrey between 1784 and 1786.  This doesn't explain why he took 20 years to get probate for the will though.
