On Sunday last, being Christmas day, Mr. Par????’s Scholars sang an Anthem at Trinity Church the morning, and a Choral Hymn at the Old Church, in the afternoon. Their performances afforded general satisfaction to the Congregations; which were numerous at both churches, and reflected much credit on their master.

[The ‘0ld’ church or the Old chapel, located on Chapel Street, was the predecessor to St. Nicholas’s church which opened in 1694]

By a letter from Lough-laran, dated Nov.28th we are informed that [the ship] General Wolfe, Capt. Howard, of this place, employed in the Bounty Fishery, had had killed 100 barrels of herrings in ten days. Each barrel upon an average contains 1000 fishes.

An accident happened about ten o’clock last Saturday night at the Golden Lion in this town. One Kelly, an Irishman went into the Kitchen where some people were sitting drinking, when some words arising, he took a pistol from his pocket and fired it at one of the company; the pistol burst and tore his left hand, on which he had poized it, in a most dreadful manner; his thumb was blown off, and his hand shattered up as far as the wrist; he now lies dangerously ill. The person whom he fired at received a ball in the palm of his right hand, which lodged nigh his wrist, and was immediately extracted; he is now in a hopeful way of recovery. Part of the pistol grazed the side of another person, do as to draw blood, but did him no further harm; there were other nine people in the kitchen, who all happily escaped. A constable attends the unhappy young fellow, and should he recover, it is supposed, a prosecution must immediately ensue.

One day last week a young woman was accused in Roper Street of stealing a bed-gown, which she had then upon her back; and the mob which soon gathered, attempting to seize her, she availed herself of the prudent example shown by Robin in The Contrivances; slipped the suspected garment off her shoulders, and left the incensed crowd to avenge the cause of justice upon it.

A private letter from London to a merchant in this town, says “A petition to his majesty (in behalf of the Americans) is now in the hands of Dr. Franklin, to be presented, and in case of a refusal, to be published, by order of the General Congress.”

We hear from Coatham in the County of York, that on Wednesday the 14th inst., a party of Dragoons arrived here, and are to be stationed at different towns adjoining the sea coast in Cleveland; to assist the revenue officers in the neighbourhood in preventing the illicit practice of smuggling, which has for several years past been carried on in a most notorious manner, and has, besides being extremely prejudicial to the revenue an far debauched the morals of the country people, who having found this trade advantageous, quitted all lawful means of earning a livelihood, and depended on this alone for support.
