Whitehaven - December 1 - 1774

The easterly winds which have prevailed for so many days past, have, it is supposed, kept back a great many American vessels, which are imagined to be up with the coast of Ireland; as the winds are now changed to the westward, we are in daily expectations of fresh intelligence from the Continent, and it is not improbable that some information may be received, by them, by the resolves of the Congress.

On Friday last, about 5 o’clock in the evening, a melancholy affair happened at Low-Mill nigh Egremont; a new stone had been fixed in the engine for grinding axes, when by too great a weight of water being upon the wheel, it broke in four pieces; one part of it was thrown with great violence through the roof of the building, another piece fell on Matthew Brady, an Irishman, who was employed at the engine, and killed him upon the spot.

[A burial is recorded - that on 27.11.1774 of Matthew Brady at Egremont Church]

The Molly, Capt. Kelsick, is arrived at Rotterdam, after a passage of eight days.

The Shannon, Capt. Nicholas Moore, of this port, from Carolina, is arrived at Waterford, after a hard passage of eleven weeks; all his sails were lost but one, and he had only a single piece of beef remaining.

Last night the members of the St. Andrew’s club consisting of a great number of gentlemen, met at the Indian King in roper Street, where an elegant supper was provided.

Last Tuesday a Vestry was held in the parish church of Workington, when it was agreed to set? a subscription for a Peal of 6 Bells, a Clock and Chimes; the business was immediately begun and upwards of of £400 was subscribed by the gentlemen then present. Henry Curwen Esq. gave a very handsome sum. The rebuilding of this church (which is in some respects the completest in the County) has cost the inhabitants of Workington near £1000. [£1000 would be equivalent to £180,000 in 2024 – by BOE calculation]

In the City of Carlisle there are now living under on roof, five generations: a boy, his mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother.
