Sheriffs appointed by his Majesty in Council for the year 1824:—Cumberland, Thomas Henry GRAHAM, of Edmond-Castle, Esq.;
Northumberland, Edw. COLLINGWOOD, of Dissington-Hall, Esq.; Yorkshire, Sir John VAN DE BEMPDÉ JOHNSTONE, of Hackness, Bart.;
Cheshire, Peter Langford BROOKE, of Mere, Esq.—County Palatine of Lancaster, John ENTWISLE, of Foxholes, Esq.

Mr. Justice BAYLEY and Mr. Justice HOLROYD will come on the Spring Northern Circuit.

The Rev. Charles Henry HALL, D. D. and Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, is appointed to the Deanery of Durham, vacant by the death of
the late Lord Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry.

The annual meeting of the Subscribers to the Carlisle Newsroom took place on Monday night. After some routine business had been
disposed of, and certain arrangements made as to an addition the number of papers now that Parliament has assembled, the old
contention relative to the John Bull was renewed. Honest John was proposed by Mr. Joseph FERGUSON, and seconded by Mr. G. S.
MOUNSEY. Mr. W. HALTON and Mr. DOBINSON spoke against the motion, and characterized Mr. Bull as a libeller of the dead and the
living. Wm. HODGSON, Esq. supported the proposition: whatever was its character or practice, he thought he might venture to hazard
an opinion, he said, that both the gentlemen who wished to exclude it from the Newsroom were in the habit of peeping into it. No
contradiction was given to this. Finally, after some further opposition from Mr. R. DIXON, solicitor (who ineffectually proposed the
Examiner instead), the motion for John Bull's immediate introduction was carried by 23 to 11. An unconcerned spectator might be
tempted to ask why the subscribers to a public Newsroom, embracing persons of various parties and principles, should be restrained
from having those papers which they best like to read? At the late meeting of the Cockermouth Newsroom Subscribers, John Bull was
also introduced, after some discussion, and the opposition of the Rev. Mr. BENSON, who, we understand, declared that he would
withdraw his subscription if the proposition was carried. This homage to John Bull, by persons opposed to him in political
sentiment, must be very flattering to him.

Since our last, we have seen a plan of the intended improvements beyond the East Walls of the City. It is in contemplation to have a
very handsome new street, parallel with that called the Horse-market, adjoining the Crescent. The Earl of Lonsdale and the
Corporation are laying out for sale, the fields called Aglionby Lands and Crosby Close—the scite to be intersected by spacious
streets 20 yards wide. It may be safely predicted that in a few years, a fine airy new town will spring up in this quarter, and
probably give birth to further equally important additions and improvements.

The sale of the vacant strip of land belonging to the Corporation, extending from the Scotch Gates to the bottom of Finkle-street,
was well attended on Thursday evening, and the whole was sold.—Lot 1, to Mr. MOUNSEY and Mr. CONNELL, for the use of their houses in
Fisher-street. Lots 2 and 3, to Mr. Paul NIXSON, for, at present, marble and stone yards. Lot 4, to Mr. John FORSTER, for the use of
his buildings opposite. Lots 5 and 6, to Mr. ATKINSON, who purchased, we understand, on behalf of Messrs. FERGUSON. Lot 7, to Mr. G.
H. HEWIT, of Burgh, for what object is not stated. Lots 8, 9, and 10, to Mr. BLOW, for the purpose of erecting dwelling-houses.—To
this we are happy to add, that the Corporation have purchased Mr. MATTHEWS's house, at the Scotch Gates, at £450, for the purpose of
taking it down, in order to widen the entrance into this new street; a sacrifice for the good of the town which will be received
with great satisfaction. The old materials of this building were disposed of for £40.

An accident happened at Stanwix Bank, near Eden Bridge, on Tuesday night, about twelve o'clock, which had well nigh involved very
serious consequences. The carriage of Dr. LOWRY, of Crosby, happened to be ascending the hill, with ladies in it, just as the Robert
Burns coach from Dumfries was rapidly descending, with lights; and the Rev. Doctor's coachman making a rather awkward attempt to
cross the way in order to turn off for Crosby, the horses of the Robert Burns, without the possibility of prevention, ran plump in
upon the carriage, by which three of them were thrown down and much injured, the harness terribly shattered, and the pole of the
coach broken. Happily no human being was hurt; nor was Dr. LOWRY's carriage essentially injured. The confusion which followed the
concussion may be better conceived than described. The Robert Burns was got into town with considerable difficulty, after the delay
of nearly an hour. An Irish nobleman was a passenger in it.

The Carlisle harriers cast off on Monday, at Cargo-lane; on Wednesday, at Blackford; and on Friday, at Aiket Gate; each morning at
8.

On Wednesday last, a couple, who had fled from Grantham in breathless haste, in order to plight troth at the Gretna shrine of Hymen,
passed through this city to that place, where the knot was summarily tied, and they returned to the Bush, and retired to rest. In a
short time, the lady's father arrived; but alas! he was too late; the deed was done; so making the best of a bad matter the old
gentleman cordially returned homewards in company with his naughty daughter and new son-in-law. The lady had the advantage of a good
face, plenty of flesh and blood, and an independent fortune, it is stated, to some amount.

At a shooting-match for half a sovereign, which took place last week, at the house of Mr. JOHNSON, of Briscoe, near this city, the
prize was won by Mr. Joseph LOWRY, joiner, Cross Roads, who drove the nail at the distance of 110 yards: a shot of this description
but very seldom occurs.
