We are assured from a good authority that the vast quantities of herrings caught round the coasts of the Isle of Mann, this season, upon an average of 2s per hundred, amounted to £100,000. The benefits arising from such a fishery have been sensibly felt in many market towns and villages in Lancashire and Westmorland.

On Tuesday morning last died at Appleby, in in the 61st year of her age, Mrs. Mary Thwaites, wife of Mr. James Thwaites, a lady much respected in that town.

Last Thursday night, Anthony Sanders of Langwathby Hall, nigh Penrith, had a black mare taken out of his stable, by a man he had hired as a labourer. Sanders, on missing the mare, rode off to Carlisle, he was informed there that she had gone forward for Dumfries. He pursued her with all speed, but before he reached there , the man who had taken her had stopped at an Inn in that place; when a boy standing by cry’d out. That is Anthony Saunder’s mare, I know her: she ran for a plated Bridle on Penrith’s Race Ground, last summer. The thief answered, you are right: he lent her to me, and I am to return her by the post. I am the post, replied the boy. The thief immediately resigned the mare and gave the postboy 1s 6d to convey her to Penrith, where she came last Saturday very much abused. It is supposed that the man was a deserter.

Extract of a letter from Alexandria in Virginia to a Gentleman in Whitehaven.

“I presume you have not fully considered the heavy and severe trial of the Boston tea affair; I think, as you, that they went too great lengths in destroying it. My opinion is, they should have tried the virtue of their people, and if it had landed, not have bought or used one grain of it. The baneful duty was retained for no purpose but to raise a revenue on America; and, if one may judge from appearances, the ministry intended to give them (the East India company) in a manner, an exclusive privilege, for the depredations made on them, by way of retaliation, But cruelly are the Bostonians treated; their trade ruined; the hand of an unmerciful minister upon them; - etc etc etc”

[Also the Boston ladies had nothing to drink for their afternoon tea!]

On Thursday last a couple on a matrimonial jaunt to Gretna Green, in a chaise and four, overtook a loaded wagon on the road between that place and Longtown, and not being able to pass as expeditiously as they would have wished, on account of the waggoner’s refusing to quit the way, the gallant in a violent passion presented a pistol at the waggoner at which honest Roger, so far from being intimidated, threatened if he spoke another word, to pull him out of the chaise, and roll him in the dirt, which cooled the amorous hero, and he patiently submitted to wait the leisure of the waggoner, till the road admitted of more convenient passage.

There is a pear tree, at Braystones near Egremont, now in bloom: the same tree was in blossom last Christmas.

A few days ago was married at Ainstable, in this County, by the Rec. Mr. Railton, Mr John Hodgson of Baskitdyke, to the amiable Miss Peggy Baumond of Carlisle, a young lady possessed of every valuable accomplishment, with a large fortune.

Yesterday was married in this town, Mr. William Carter to Mrs Massey of the Cross Keys.

Yesterday evening the Molly, Capt. Kelsick, sailed for Rotterdam.

Yesterday began the quarter sessions of the peace for this town; nothing of consequence was done; the jury meet this morning at eleven o’ clock.

Five Guineas Reward

Whereas on Monday night, the 14th inst. At a quarter past 11 o’clock, some person or persons did break open the coal vault belonging to my house, with a view, I presume to steal coals, and being disappointed at some alarm, afterwards broke several panes of glass in my kitchen windows: I do hereby offer a reward of Five Guineas, to any person that will give me information, so as to convict the offender.

Many idle fellows have of late broke windows, pulled off rappers, torn down rails, and done several other injuries, in my neighbourhood, out of sheer wantonness; to make an example, if I can have the present person, or persons, convicted, who have committed this damage on my house, I will be at the whole expense of this prosecution, and the reward shall be paid, if the party is convicted any time within six calendar months.

Whitehaven. 16, 1774 SAMUEL MARTIN
