I am guilty of excluding some of the worst excesses of Georgian verbiage from these extracts as it adds nothing to the information contained in the reports.

On Monday last, orders were received at the Customs house here, not to suffer any gunpowder or Fire Arms to be exported, either abroad or coast-ways for six months, without a particular order from the

Board of Ordinance.

On Friday afternoon, Sir James Lowther Bart., came here, accompanied by Sir Fletch[er] Norton, Governor Johnstone, Mr. Norton, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Stanhope Esqrs. Mr Home, Dr. Dunn, where the were met at Distington by a great number of gentlemen, and as they entered this Town

[ Whitehaven ], amidst the acclamations of a vast concourse of people. The guns at the fort were fired, and colours hoisted on board every vessel in the harbour. At night there were Bonfires and Illuminations, and every thing gave marks of general satisfaction, which were se gratefully felt by the Baronet.

On Monday night, by Sir James Lowther’s desire, there was a Concert performed, in Mr. Watson’s New Assembly Room, the audience was genteel and numerous. After the concert was ended, the ball was opened by Sir James Lowther and Miss Fleming; several minuets were danced: country dances began about eleven, and continued till nigh two the next morning.

The paragraph inserted in a Dublin and London paper, which says “that Mr. ASTLEY, the celebrated Riding Master, and his son were drowned [when] entering the port of Whitehaven” is entirely without foundation, Mr. Astley landed at Workington, exhibited his amazing performance there and at Whitehaven, and afterwards proceeded to Kendal and Lancaster.

On the 16th instant, the brigantine Morson, Capt. Keen, in sailing from Sunderland near the port of Lancaster, for St. Kitts, run abord the Snow Content, Capt. Wilkinson, then attempting to get out of the river, the wind blowing fresh at SE by which means she was so much disabled that she could not proceed on her voyage

We are informed from Wigton, that on Saturday last died there, very suddenly, Mr. Jeremiah Stoddart, Merchant and Manufacturer of Home-made Linens. He had perhaps as strong a memory as any man living. He employed not less than twenty weavers and spinners, and for those and the other parts of his Business, Buying, Selling etc. he kept no accounts; but left the whole to his memory. After his decease there was found well wrapped up in a few old rags, and cram’d into a crevice in the wall, a large quantity of Thirty-six shilling; Pieces and several light Guineas.

Yesterday the Eagle, Henry Barns master, sailed for South Carolina.

On Monday last was married at Penrith, Mr. Pattinson Fisher, a gentleman greatly respected there, to Miss Molly Porthouse, daughter of Mr. John Porthouse of that town. From the amiable character of this couple there is no doubt but they will prove the Marriage-state to be what, with the virtuous, it always is – The most perfect and delightful Bond of social life.

We hear that a great entertainment is preparing at the Castle; [the Whitehaven home of the Lowther family], several spacious and elegant Tents are erected in the Castle yard; which are opened for the reception of those who chuse to partake of the Public Dinner this afternoon
