Hi there,
I am trying to identify a place in the parish of Stapleton, perhaps the
township of Solport, called Shaw House. I have found no likely
candidate in the Old Cumbria Gazetteer so am hoping that someone with a
knowledge of local history may be familiar with it. Here is my evidence
for it as related to my family:

*James Routledge* lived here from at least January of 1821 until his death
on 5 November 1826.

· Tombstone in Stapelton churchyard: C49) In memory of James
ROUTLEDGE who died at Showhouse Novr 5th 1826 aged 75 years.

· Buried 7 November 1826, abode, Shawhouse (Stapleton BTs)

· Death notice of widow Jane Routledge, Carlisle Patriot 21 August
1846 "At White Close, in the parish of Stapleton, on the 13th inst.,
Jane, widow of the late Mr James Routledge, of Shaw House . . ."

Several of his grandchildren were born and died here between 1821 and 1826:

*John Barnfather* (son of daughter Isabella)
Bapt. 28 January 1821, abode Shaw House (Stapleton
BTs);

Buried 21 April 1821, abode Shawhouse (Stapleton BTs)

*Jane Routledge* (daughter of son Richard)
Bapt. 20 July 1823, abode Shawhouse (Stapleton
BTs)

*Isabella Routledge* (daughter of son Richard)
Bapt. 20 October 1824, abode Shawhouse (Stapleton
BTs)

*Mary Routledge *(daughter of son Richard)
Bapt. 15 December 1826, abode Shawhouse
(Stapleton, BTs)
(Richard’s next child, Mabel, was baptized 8 Jan 1830 and her parents were
living at Moss side)
Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Jeanette Hurst
