Whitehaven - March 16 - 1775.
The out Pensioners belonging to Chelsea Hospital, residing in the following counties, are, by an order in the Gazette, to appear at the places afore mentioned, from the first to the fifteenth day of May next, in order to be examined, that it may be known who of them are capable of doing Garison duty, viz.
All the Out-Pensioners residing
In Yorkshire, at York
In Cheshire and Lancashire, at Chester
In Cumberland and Westmorland, at Carlisle
In Durham and Northumberland, at Newcastle.
Friday last was married at St. James’s Church, Capt. Hodson of Broughton nigh Cockermouth, to Miss Senhouse of this place.
The Parish Register records the wedding as between a Joseph Hoskins with Miss Eleanor Senhouse on the 10 March 1775
We are authorised by the steward of the Lead mines in Borrowdale, to contradict the report of the mines being robbed last week; which we noticed last week; the whole is entirely false, and propagated as it was supposed, to favour a real fraud that of imposing upon the ignorant and unwary a quantity of adulterated Black lead, under pretence of its being stolen from the mines at that time.
The cargo of the ship - Assistance, Capt. Stephen Farish of this place, was sold by the Committee of Norfolk; and 3000 bushels of coals in the Pomona, Capt. Sherwen, are advertised by the same Committee, in the Norfolk Intelligencer of the 2nd of February. [ I had not realised that Whitehaven had exported coal as far as the New World at this time]
There is now at Mr. Dixon’s of Lamplugh Hall a lamb, which was lamb’d the 28th of February.
Last Sunday a little boy playing on board a vessel in the harbour, fell over the side, between that and another vessel; he was with difficulty got up again, but was so much bruised that he languished till Tuesday, and then died.
Monday last Mr. Ore, from Penrith, was unfortunately from his horse, in Duke Street; he was taken up without signs of life, but immediate assistance being got, it is hoped he will recover.
Lately died at Wanstead, near London, Walter Fletcher Esq. of Hutton Hall in this county.
Mr. John Harrison jnr., of Kirkby Steven, in the County of Westmorland, attorney at law, is appointed a Master extraordinary to the High Court of Chancery.
Sunday afternoon a man drank (for a wager) at a public house in this town, six tankards of Porter in four hours; three of which he swallowed in a quarter of an hour, which had such an effect upon him, that he lay for a considerable time without any signs of life.
Monday last four recruiting parties, with a number of recruits, came to this town, to embark for Ireland,
