DIED.
At Millbank, in the parish of Troqueer, on the 27th ult. John BARKER, Esq. late surgeon, Dumfries, in the 65th year of his age.
Joh
At last! A direct ancestor! John BARKER (1758-1824) was my 3xgt grandfather. He was born in Grassthwaite How at the foot of Lake Ullswater, the son of Robert BARKER and Ann DOBSON. Ann was described as the daughter of John DOBSON, “proprietor of Grassethowe” and the two oldest BARKER sons, John and Thomas, were born at Patterdale before they moved to Dumfries. According to Tom Wilson who wrote “Memorials of Sanquhar Kirkyard’ in 1912, “John became a doctor and entered the navy where he served for a considerable time, and upon retiring from the navy, settled at Leadhills where he continued to practise as a surgeon. He was highly skilled in both chemistry and mineralogy and soon took over the management of the lead mines there, which he conducted in an exemplary manner…in 1815 he was elected a Magistrate and in 1817, provost of the Burgh [of Dumfries].” ,Apparently the affairs of the Burgh, had got into a terrible mess which John Barker soon sorted out, and ‘with his great strength of mind, acute intellect, and mild manners…he was held in great esteem.”
Petra, hope that’s not too much information?
