CARLISLE RACES, 1823.

(P. H. HOWARD and R. STEPHENSON, Esqrs. Stewards.)

[The outcome of seven horse races not transcribed.]

The sport, on the whole, was good-at least, much better than usual: the race for the Lord Lieutenant's silver cup was particularly
spirited.

On Tuesday, in consequence of the rain, the ground was attended by a very small number of persons; on Wednesday it is calculated
that from 12 to 15,000 were present, a great part of them country people, attracted by the wrestling;-on Thursday the attendance was
also numerous.

The Yorkshire Musical Festival took from us many of our neighbouring gentry.

We observed on the course: The Earl and Countess of Lonsdale, the Hon. Colonel and Lady Eleanor LOWTHER, Lord Frederick and Lady
Mary BENTINCK, Sir James GRAHAM, Bart. M. P., Wm. JAMES, Esq. M. P., Capt. CALLAGHAN, Sir Hew D. ROSS, H. HOWARD, Esq. of Corby, P.
H. HOWARD, Esq., Rowland STEPHENSON, Esq., Gen. SHARP, John DE WHELPDALE, Esq., J. R. G. GRAHAM, Esq., T. WYBERGH, Esq., Col.
MAXWELL, Col. MEIN, Capt. IRWIN, F. F. VANE, Esq., W. P. JOHNSON, Esq., Capt. WYNDHAM, and a great many ladies and gentlemen of the
town and vicinity.

The company at the ordinaries was not so numerous as we have known it: there was, in particular, a great deficiency of gentlemen of
the town. On the first day, 41 dined at the Bush; 39 at the Coffee-House, on the second; and 26 at the Bush on Thursday. There were
140 ladies and gentlemen at the first assembly, 105 at the second, and 98 at the third. Most of the strangers departed in the course
of yesterday.

Lord Frederick BENTINCK and Capt. IRWIN were chosen stewards for next year.

The subscription for the Gold Cup was not complete, we believe, on account of the absence of some gentlemen who in general put down
their names. Lord LOWTHER was unavoidably away.

Lord F. BENTINCK exerted himself most actively to complete a subscription for a second fifty on the last day. The innkeepers should
raise a considerable part of this plate.

Beggars, ballad-singers, petty gamblers, and gamblers of more dignified appearance, were on the ground in great force. The crowd,
now and then, were rather obstreperous; they demolished several travelling establishments; particularly a roulette marquee, and
scattered its fragments in a thousand directions. Although fifty persons were employed to keep the course, it has seldom been seen
in a more disorderly state; there was, at times, scarcely room for one horse to pass another, if able to do so, between the distance
and starting posts, the most important part of the ground for a push. Lord F. BENTINCK expressed his determination to cause better
order to be kept next year.
