It is probable that the long distance walker mentioned in Petra’s transcription – was
12.01.1800 Miller Jonah son of William & Eleanor of Bridekirk, a labourer baptised at Bridekirk.

Saturday 06 Sep 1823 (p. 4, col. 3-5) [continued]
We stated in our last, that Jonah MILLER, from the neighbourhood of Cockermouth, had commenced the undertaking of walking, on a part of Keswick race-ground, 150 miles in 48 hours. He started at six minutes past four on Wednesday afternoon, and before that time on Friday he had completed one hundred and fifty five miles! Having finished 100 miles on Thursday evening, he rested for about five hours, and resumed his task a little before one on Friday morning. He walked quite fresh to the last, and his speed was not at all abated. The inhabitants of Keswick manifested great interest in his success, and every thing that could be desired was provided for his comfort and accommodation. He was carried from the ground in a chair decorated with ribands, and a handsome subscription was collected for him. A minute statement of this great pedestrian feat has been forwarded to us, but we cannot at present find room for it. MILLER is 25 years of age, and 5ft. 4¼ in. high. He says he will undertake to walk 160 miles in 48 hours for any sum not exceeding £50, nor less than £20.
