Saturday 06 Sep 1823 (p. 4, col. 3-5) [continued]

At a numerous and respectable meeting, held on Tuesday week, at Hexham, present, Lord LOWTHER, C. J. BRANDLING, Esq. M. P., W. ORD,
Esq., M. P., Messrs. LOCKER, WAILES, R. W. BRANDLING, &c. &c. an extensive plan for the improvement of the roads in the western part
of Northumberland, and for opening new lines of communication with the adjoining counties, was adopted. The work, which will extend
to upwards of 120 miles, and for which the estimate is twenty-six thousand pounds, is to be planned and executed under the direction
of Mr. M'ADAMS. It will open easy lines of communication through those mountainous districts which may be said to be at present
almost inaccessible. The governors of Greenwich Hospital, as becomes the guardians of those vast estates, take the lead in this
important work, and it will, no doubt, be supported by the liberal contributions of the landowners, and others, whose interests will
be so much promoted by it. Upwards of fifteen thousand pounds was immediately subscribed, and it is expected that the remaining nine
will be rapidly obtained, so advantageous are the terms offered to the subscribers.—Newcastle Courant.

Commissions signed by the Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Westmorland.—William Waltham ATKINSON, Esq. to be Deputy Lieutenant; John
WILSON, to be ditto.

Lady Eleanor LOWTHER and Family, lately resident at Worthing, have set out for the North, and are shortly expected at Lowther
Castle, where Col. LOWTHER has been since the commencement of the shooting season.

On Saturday last, as Mr. John COSTIN, of Allonby, was going out of Maryport harbour, he accidently fell overboard his vessel and was
unfortunately drowned.—He has left a wife and small family.

We are sorry to observe by the Kendal paper, that Capt. BROMLEY was severely hurt there last week, by the giving way of a scaffold
on which he, Mr. UNSWORTH, and Mr. GIBSON, the architect were standing. The latter two escaped with trifling injury.

It is not the intention of Government to fill the vacancy which lately occurred in Newcastle custom-house by the death of Mr. J.
LIDDELL, landing waiter. A saving to the public will thus be effected of £400 per annum, and the same system of retrenchment is to
be adopted in the event of some other vacancies.—The collector of the customs at Newcastle, it is understood, is about to retire.
Richard BELL, Esq. is named as a candidate to succeed him in the office, but an opinion is prevalent that it will be filled by the
promotion of an inferior officer of the customs.—Tyne Mer.

The Bishop of Durham arrived at Auckland Castle, from the South of England, on Monday se'nnight, after an absence of three years.
His Lordship, though in his 80th year, is said to look remarkably well.

Since our last the herring fishery has been very productive; and, should the present fine weather continue, an abundant supply of
our staple commodity may yet be expected.—Isle of Man Adv.

WRESTLING.—The Amateurs of our Fancy Wrestling Ring are highly gratified that the Earl of Lonsdale, Lord LOWTHER, Colonel LOWTHER,
John LOWTHER, Esq., Sir Philip MUSGRAVE, Bart., and Philip HOWARD, Esq., of Corby Castle, have in so handsome a manner subscribed to
the wrestling at our ensuing races. This truly northern amusement excites more interest and attracts more company than even the
horse-racing. It certainly is one of the finest spectacles in the world to see the active, strong, and well dressed wrestler enter
the ring, without any feeling of animosity towards his competitor, and with a mind imbued with no other sentiment than that of
harmless and honourable victory. Had it not been nursed under the courteous auspices of our worthy Lord Lieutenant, this science
would never have attained its present perfection; it would have fallen into disrepute from the sneers of over scrupulous individuals
who are alarmed at the exhibitions of innocent agility and fortitude, lending, as they allege, to the contamination of moral
sentiment. Such opinions would have been scouted by their forefathers, who practised the same diversions, and whose hardy
descendants have been long claimed as the distinguished heroes of Neptune and of Mars. The Earl of Lonsdale, when called upon, has
always liberally contributed to the support of this harmless recreation—in fact, his Lordship is now universally considered the
patron of the wrestling Athletic of the North.—From an Amateur.

We stated in our last, that Jonah MILLER, from the neighbourhood of Cockermouth, had commenced the undertaking of walking, on a part
of Keswick race-ground, 150 miles in 48 hours. He started at six minutes past four on Wednesday afternoon, and before that time on
Friday he had completed one hundred and fifty five miles! Having finished 100 miles on Thursday evening, he rested for about five
hours, and resumed his task a little before one on Friday morning. He walked quite fresh to the last, and his speed was not at all
abated. The inhabitants of Keswick manifested great interest in his success, and every thing that could be desired was provided for
his comfort and accommodation. He was carried from the ground in a chair decorated with ribands, and a handsome subscription was
collected for him. A minute statement of this great pedestrian feat has been forwarded to us, but we cannot at present find room for
it. MILLER is 25 years of age, and 5ft. 4¼ in. high. He says he will undertake to walk 160 miles in 48 hours for any sum not
exceeding £50, nor less than £20.

The match upon Kendal race course, between Mr. HUDSON's ch. f. White Rose, and Mr. KAY's b. g. by Comus, for 200 guineas, was won by
the latter by about two lengths.

Yesterday morning, a small bird being closely pursued by a hawk, on Shap Fells, took refuge amongst the passengers in the
Independent coach (at that time passing), and was brought to this town.—Kendal Chronicle.
