I wondered what a Winchester bushel was, so I looked it up.
It was a volumetric measurement only, rough;y equivalent to 8 gallons, but
the measuring baskets or tubs were a bit less than 8 imperial gallons. The
linear dimensions of the standard devices were specified in round numbers,
rather than the complex numbers which would have given exactly 8 gallons.
Growing up on a farm, I was very familiar with the 3 bushel jute bags in
which we received wheat and other products. For wheat, a bushell was 60
pound, (oats 40 pound) - a measure of weight, rather than volume. A
volumetric measure for commerce was never a good basis for grains and grain
products, as both the packed density and moisture content can vary so much
for each product. Thus, a moisture specification may also required.
