WESTMORLAND SESSIONS.

The Michaelmas Sessions for the East and West Wards of the County of Westmorland, were held at Appleby on Monday last, before a
numerous Bench of Magistrates, among whom were the Hon. Col. LOWTHER and Sir Philip MUSGRAVE, Bart.-the Rev. Dr. SATTERTHWAITE in
the Chair.

The township of Cotherstone, Yorkshire, appealed against the removal of a pauper thither by Bongate, named Hannah DENT, who, Bongate
contended, gained a settlement by occupancy and residence. There was conflicting testimony as to some of the facts of the case,
presenting little of novelty, but the Bench confirmed the order of removal.

Thomas HARLING and Thomas SANDERSON, servants to BOUSFIELD & Co., of Hartley Brewery, near Kirkby-stephen, were indicted for
assaulting Mr. W. SMITH of that town. The prosecutor, who is a blacksmith, hammered out his own case in the following address to the
jury:-"Whya ye see I went to Mally EWBANK's on the 22d July, about some wood 'at was lying on a boaks. To be seure, Mally was varra
stingy about t' wood, and HOARLING and SANDERSON wur theer. HOARLING telt ma that I owercharged his maister aboot some wark, and
they threw a tankard o' yell in ma feace. I went oot to John RUDD's to get a kitty o' yell, and as I cam oot they wur comin by wi a
horse and cart, and SANDERSON got hold o' ma and threw ma down, and brok collar bane. I dinnet wark for twelve weeks, and dinnet
knaw that I sal evver by yeable to work agen."-It turned out, however, that William had been very abusive; that he spat in
SANDERSON's face at the time of his accident; and was altogether the aggressor; the Jury, therefore, returned a verdict of Not
Guilty, much to the chagrin of the eloquent and veracious prosecutor.
