NORTHERN CIRCUIT.The time of holding the ensuing assizes is thus fixed:
YORK, Saturday, July 12.
DURHAM, Wednesday, July 30.
NEWCASTLE, Saturday, August 2.
CARLISLE, Saturday, August 9.
APPLEBY, Saturday, August 16.
LANCASTER, Wednesday, August 20.
The will the of late John SOWERBY, Esq. of Dalston-Hall, in this county, has been proved at Doctors' Commons, and the personalty
alone in this country is sworn to be under five hundred thousand pounds. He has died one of the richest men that ever went from the
north. His wealth is estimated at above a million.
The Carlisle Wellington Club celebrated the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, on Wednesday, by dining together at the King's
Arms; Richard LOWRY, Esq. of Stanwix, in the chair. The glass went briskly round, and a number of loyal and patriotic toasts were
given and received with becoming spirit. Twenty-nine sat down at table.
Carlisle was again plentifully supplied with fine fresh herrings, yesterday, at from 14 to 20 for sixpence. They were caught in the
Solway Frith.
The weather since our last, though dry and tolerably favourable, has, notwithstanding, been chequered with cold blasts, and one or
two sharp frosts. This is the longest day in the year; and we have hitherto experienced, comparatively speaking, very little summer.
The hay-harvest is begun in several parts of the neighbourhood of Carlislethe crop, in general, a heavy one.
The premises of Mr. PENRITH, dyer, near the Irish Gate of this City, very narrowly escaped destruction by fire on Saturday morning
last. On the previous night, twenty-seven dyed chains or warps had been put into a shed, outside the drying-house; and having been
placed against a wall which communicated with the stove-pipe, the great heat ignited the cotton. About two o'clock in the morning,
the flames, just bursting forth, were accidentally discovered, and suppressed without any other material damage than the destruction
of the yarn, worth nearly £30.
We lately noticed the appearance of the small-pox in Carlisle and neighbourhood. We now learn that this insidious and dangerous
malady is spreading with considerable rapidity, as there are unfortunately many who still obstinately reject vaccination, and
therefore withhold its benefits from their children. But candour requires to state that we have heard of a few instances in which
children have taken the small-pox after vaccination; in a very mild form, howeverso mild as not to confine the patient.
A district Committee, in aid of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, was formed at Whitehaven yesterday week. Lord
Lonsdale has consented to become patron.
The intended Masonic Ceremonial in this City, on Monday next, excites a great degree of public attention, and is likely to attract
an immense body of spectators, for whose accommodation ample arrangements are in progress. Galleries are to be erected near the
scite of the chapel-foundation, and when completed they will be inspected by competent persons to preclude the possibility of
accident; and peace-officers will be on the spot to insure regularity. We believe the following programme is correct as far as it
goes:
Order of proceeding for the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cumberland, to be held at King's Assembly-room, Coffee-House, on Monday, 23rd
day of June, 1823, being the day appointed by the Provincial Grand Master, Cumberland, to lay the foundation-stone of the chapel

The procession will move from the Assembly-room and up English-street, pass the north side of the west Court House: on its arrival
at the site of the intended building it will halt by sound of trumpet, open out, and face inwards, allowing the Provincial Grand
Lodge to pass up the centre in reversed order, and enter the area. Each Lodge will take its place in the gallery allotted to it.
After the ceremony, the procession will move to the Lodge in the same order as it proceeded from thence; on a given signal, halt,
open out as before, face inwards, allowing the Provincial Lodge to move up the centre.
The Brethren are requested to appear in regulation aprons and gloves. (See book of constitution, page 123), excepting the Lodges
under the constitution of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Yet the whole are expected to appear in black clothing, military excepted.
The Doric, the Corinthian, and the Ionic Light, the Ark, &c. will be carried by the subordinate Lodges.
A Throne is erected for the Provincial Master; and the Lodge will be ornamented with ever-greens, and opened by candle light, in all
the splendour and ceremony of Masonry.
No brother will be allowed to dine, who did not attend the procession; nor any at the procession, who does not take a dinner ticket.
The brethren are requested to attend at half past 11 o'clock, and the Lodge will be opened at high noon, in ample form and with
solemn prayer.
We believe this is the first time of the Cumberland Provincial Lodge appearing in public properly clothed.
