The Earl and Countess of Lonsdale had a grand party at dinner on Tuesday, at their house in Charles-street, Berkeley-square. 

 

Brampton new fair, near Appleby, on Wednesday, was numerously attended. Cattle had slow sale; sheep and horses went well off, at
good prices. 

 

The Members and Friends of the Cumberland Benevolent Institution dined together at the Crown and Anchor Tavern, London, on the 5th
inst. Lord Viscount LOWTHER in the chair. 

 

On Friday the 6th instant, as a young couple from Longtown were returning from the temple of Hymen at Annan, in a post chaise,
accompanied by another female and three young men, the carriage, which was proceeding rapidly through the village of Dornock, was,
by the rashness of the driver, overturned. The bride, who unfortunately sat on that side of the chaise which came to the ground,
with her arm hanging out of the window, was much injured; her arm was dreadfully lacerated, but no bones were broken. Medical aid
was speedily obtained from Annan through the exertions of Mr. B. JOHNSTONE, of Dornock; and, indeed, the whole of the villagers
present evinced much concern for the welfare of the fair traveller. 

 

An inquest has been holden upon the body of Ralph CROFT, of Biggins, near Kirkby-Lonsdale. From depositions made before the Coroner,
it appeared, that on the previous Friday evening, the deceased, who was in liquor, though not drunk, challenged John HARGREAVES, a
neighbour, to fight; that CROFT was knocked down; that, on being knocked down the fourth time, he became insensible, and was put to
bed, HARGREAVES assisting; that he never spoke, or appeared sensible, from that time till Monday evening, when he expired.
HARGREAVES has been committed to Appleby gaol, charged with manslaughter. CROFT was 35 years of age. He has left a wife and six
children, entirely destitute. HARGREAVES has also a wife and family. The parties had for a long time been upon indifferent terms. 

 

Tancred, the horse that ran second at Epsom, for the Derby, and indeed the only one that had any chance with Emilius, the winner,
has been purchased of the owner, Lord LOWTHER, by Lord Darlington, for 1200 guineas, and is on his way northward, to prepare for the
great St. Leger Stakes, at Doncaster, for which he is entered. 

 

Mr. Edward WALKER, of Scales, near Ulverstone, met with a premature end, a few days ago. He was blasting a rock; and the explosion
not taking place for a considerable time after the match was laid, he went to the spot, and at the moment of reaching it, the powder
ignited and the unfortunate man was nearly shattered in pieces. 

 

The body of Miss DRYDEN, lately missing at Durham, was found in the river Wear, into which she is presumed to have thrown herself,
as she expressed an intention of doing so to a companion. The verdict of the Coroner's jury was-found drowned. 

 

The foundation-stone of a new gaol and house of correction at Newcastle, was laid on the 4th inst. with considerable ceremony, by
the Mayor. Mr. DOBSON is the architect. 

 

We lately described a singular alliance between a nest of young squirrels and a cat. The Dumfries Courier, of Tuesday last, gives an
account of a similar attachment subsisting between a cat and a leveret; and of a bitch which has this season suckled and brought up
a lamb; the former occurred at Barjarg; the latter in Carlaverock. 

 

It is asserted that the Lancashire assizes will in future be adjourned from Lancaster to either Wigan or Warrington. 

 

By the tides of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, a goodly number of vessels were wafted to the Dock-head; and among the rest a sloop
laden with rather an uncommon cargo, viz., 1000 bushels of barley shipped at Liverpool! A speculation of this kind is so unusual
that the curious reader will be apt to shrug up his shoulders, and mutter something about sending coals to Newcastle, or peats to
the Lochar Moss. No such thing. Last year we exported potatoes to Ireland, and why not import barley from England? Such occurrences
only show the many ramifications of British commerce, and how well and beautifully the great principle of supply and demand
addresses itself to the wants of all men and all nations, when uncrossed and unmarred by human agency. Barley is now scarce in
Dumfriesshire; most of it was exported from this and the neighbouring district, at 2s. 6d. under its present price, and what at once
explains the above anomaly is, that that species of grain is at present cheaper in Liverpool than in the town of Dumfries.-Dumfries
Courier. 

 

A farmer's wife, the other day, when paying for two ounces of tea and half a pound of sugar, counted down sixteen pence-saying,
"there's the price of sixteen stone of potatoes!" Surely this was a dear-bought luxury,-two hundred-weight of potatoes for a family
cup of tea! 

 

The Curators of his Grace the Duke of Buccleuch have appointed the Rev. Mr. COCHRANE, North Shields, to the church and parish of
Hawick, vacant by the death of the Rev. Mr. ARKELL. 

 

William RICHARDSON has been sent from Dumfries to Edinburgh, preparatory to his transmission to Botany Bay. A request is gone up to
permit his wife and family to accompany him. 

 

The Eden, Wm. LITTLE, master, arrived at Liverpool from Carlisle on the 10th inst.; also the Nancy, ASKEW; John, BOYD; Crown, RAE.
