The settlements on the recent marriage of Earl Gower with the beautiful daughter of Lord Morpeth were on a princely scale. The
Marquess settled thirty thousand a year on his son.London paper.
We understand that the subject of local taxation in Dublin is now before a Committee of the House of Commons, and that Lord LOWTHER
has been requested to assist in relieving the shipping from a tax so severely felt on this coast. We are authorised to say that his
Lordship would gladly receive any relevant information from persons that are acquainted with the subject, or interested in the
measure.Cumb. Pacquet.
The Hon. Deemster CHRISTIAN has arrived in the Isle of Man, from Unerigg-Hall, and taken up his residence in a pleasant house, on
Marina Terrace, Douglas.
We learn, with much satisfaction, that means have been adopted for speedily filling up the old branch of the Eden, below the Bridge,
containing at present a most disagreeable collection of mud and putrid water.
Mr. ALEXANDER and his respectable corps dramatique, are now performing at Wigton, with considerable eclat and success.
On Tuesday evening, a novel race, for the sum of 2s. 6d. took place from Caldewgate guide-post to the Raffles and back again,
between a woman, upwards of 60 years of age, mounted on a poney, and a man, aged about 50, on foot; he to have a start of about one
fourth of the distance. The man, aware of the fiery spirit and equestrian skill of his antagonist, set off at full speed from the
point agreed on; but when the lady attempted to commence operations, her stubborn steed refused obedience, and made a long
resistance, in spite of whipping, kicking, and abundance of imprecations. Perseverance, however, conquered, and off went our
Amazonian at a break-neck pace: but as the man had made the best use of the interval, and (report says) turned three hundred yards
short of the mark, he came in first; though only by a few seconds, as his rival in fame was close at his heels at a brisk gallop,
her bonnet off her head, dangling at her back, and her under garments sporting in the breeze in a manner not to be described. There
was some dispute; the parties retired together and spent the half-crown at a neighbouring ale-house.
Committed to Carlisle gaol, by the Rev. R. MATTHEWS, Ann SLOAN, otherwise GRAHAM, charged with stealing a piece of silk, the

Notwithstanding that the early part of Monday was exceedingly wet, Rosley Hill Second Fair, was well attended by dealers, who
purchased largely of all kinds of stock, at prices rather on the advance.
It will be seen by an advertisement, p. 1, that a most unprincipled robbery was committed by a servant upon his master, at
Workington, on Tuesday night last. The money stolen was the produce of cattle and poneys, sold at Rosley fair. The fellow had the
grace to leave two pounds behind, by way, we presume, of enabling his employer to get home!
Messrs. WHIDBEY and RENNIE's plan for the improvement of Whitehaven Harbour was on Monday laid before the trustees: the estimate for
the great Western Pier is about £67,000.
Petitions to Parliament against the continuance of Colonial Slavery have been transmitted for presentation, from Bootle, Harrington,
Ravenglass, Gosforth, Nether Wasdale, Allonby, and several other places.
The Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge contemplate the establishment of a District Committee in Whitehaven.
John M'KIE, of Whitehaven, is committed for trial at the next sessions, under charge of stealing various articles from the shop of
Messrs. HESLOP and MEADE of that town, on the night of the 7th ult.
The bathing season has commenced at Allonby in a way which shews that the partiality of the public for that healthful summer
residence annually increases.
