Our third page contains the sorrowful details of a late wreck on the coast of the Isle of Man, by which no less than forty persons
lost their lives!
The tenth anniversary of the Carlisle Pitt Club, was celebrated on Wednesday last, at the Coffee House, William HODGSON, Esq. Mayor,

The Commissioners of the Customs have already acted upon the Treasury Letter in regard to our coastwise duties on coal, slate, and
stone. These important articles may now pass from Whitehaven to any part of the Port of Carlisle free of impost.
The venerable and celebrated Dr. Adam CLARKE preached in the Methodist Chapel in this City, on Tuesday evening last, to a very
crowded congregation, of various religious denominations. After the sermon, a collection was made on behalf of the Methodist
Missionary Society, amounting to £13, odd shillings.
The new bell has this week been put up in St. Cuthbert's church; it was cast by MEARES, of London, and weighs 6¾ cwt.; upwards of 1
cwt. heavier than both the old bells. It is hung in such a way as to admit two others, should the parish at any future time become
more liberally inclined.
Typhus fever is at present more than usually prevalent in Carlisle: the fever-house is nearly full.
The Concert at the Assembly-room, on Tuesday evening, for the benefit of Mrs. GARRICK and Mr. DEWAR, was attended by a genteel,
though not very numerous audience: The high price of admission, (4s.), and attractions elsewhere, contributed to this result. Mrs.
GARRICK sang delightfully; Mr. DEWAR played with extraordinary taste and skill; and the other professional gentlemen exerted
themselves in an able manner.
We understand, from persons on whose information we can fully rely, that the issuers of forged notes have lately been very actively
employed in this city and neighbourhood, where considerable numbers of counterfeit Scotch notes have been forced into circulation,
principally on the British Linen Company and Stirling Banks. Complaints of the frequency of this offence have very much increased
within the last two weeks.
On Monday last, we had some uncommonly heavy rain, and thunder and very vivid lightning: a fire-ball fell near Newtown, but did no
injury. The weather has since been highly favourable to vegetation: the appearance of all kinds of crops rapidly improves.
On Monday last, Mr. William BRAITHWAITE, of Portinscale, near Keswick, caught an Otter; one of the finest animals of the kind ever
seen in that part of the country. It weighed 27lbs.
In the course of the past week, a petition to Parliament for the abolition of Colonial Slavery, was transmitted from Penrith, signed
by 512 individuals.
James DENWOOD, a child three years' old, was drowned at Cockermouth, last week, by falling into a rivulet.
About two months ago, the children of Mr. John GRAHAM, of Blackhall-wood, near Carlisle, found a squirrel's nest, containing four
young ones, which they brought home, though apparently only a week or two old. Mr. GRAHAM gave the little strangers a kind
reception; but was at a loss how to provide for their wants. After a little consideration, it occurred to him, that a cat, from
which kittens had just been taken and drowned, might possibly be inclined to undertake the office of nurse; accordingly, the
helpless younglings were handed over to puss, who received them with pleasure, and brought them up as carefully as if they had been
her own long-whiskered offspring. In return for all this kindness, the squirrels have proved sufficiently grateful; they are
remarkably tame and docile;one of them is now in the possession of a gentleman of this city.
We observe the annunciation of a new work from the pen of the late Dr. MILNER, Dean of Carlisle, entitled, "An Essay on Human
Liberty."
The 65th regiment is under orders for Hull to relieve the 73rd, which goes to Ireland: the two companies lately stationed in our
Castle, marched northwards on Tuesday morning.
The Rev. Mr. HEELIS, steward to the Earl of Thanet, and Rector of Brougham and Doveton, has resigned the livings (says the
Westmorland Gazette) in favour of his son.
Saturday week, the Marquis and Marchioness of Huntley, arrived at Derwent Water Bay, near Keswick, the seat of their late uncle,
Lord Wm. GORDON.
Mr. WARDLE, of Kendal, solicitor, is appointed a Master Extraordinary in the Court of Chancery.
If Liverpool and Manchester can agree upon a place, it is probable that the Lancaster Assizes will in future be adjourned to it.
The lower class of Irishmen resident in Dumfries have agreed to watch the grave of M'KANA, who was executed there, for a certain
time, to prevent any depredation by resurrection men.
James LANDALLS, a poor but industrious mechanic, in Alnwick, during late years, when work was scarce and provisions dear, found
himself, in spite of constant exertions, incapable of supporting his family, and was obliged to apply for parochial relief. Since
the times have become more favourable, by rigid economy he has saved two pounds, the exact amount of the relief he had received at
various times, and, with a spirit of independence worthy of an Englishman, has paid it back to the Overseers!
