A petition to Parliament against the Insolvent Debtors' Act, will be placed in Mr. SCOTT's shop, for signature, on Wednesday next,
and remain there one week; at the end of which time it will be transmitted for presentation. Petitions to the same effect have been
numerously signed in all the principal commercial towns.
On Thursday last, pursuant to notice, a vestry meeting was held in St. Cuthbert's Church, in this city, to receive the report of the
Committee appointed in March last to furnish bells for that church, when it was agreed that the committee should procure a good
bell, and that the old ones should be sold to defray part of the expense of the new. The new bell will weigh about 6 cwt., and will
exceed in weight both the old.
The prisoners in the gaol beg to thank the Grand Jury for a donation of two guineas.
Five male prisoners effected their escape from our gaol on Thursday morning. Two of them have since surrendered themselves. They
were persons under sentence of imprisonment.
We hear that there are many cases of small-pox at present in Carlisle; and that several persons have died of that disease.
E. Williams HASELL, Esq. is appointed receiver-general for the County of Westmorland, Lancashire-over-the-sands, and Lancashire
north of the Lune. An appointment as unexpected as unsolicited.
A boy named Allan JOHNSTON, was killed at Low Mill, last week, by entanglement in the machinery.
During the late heavy gales of wind and snow, a dwelling house on Stainmore was completely covered over; the inhabitants were an old
man and his wife. On the neighbours cutting the way to the door, the old man was fiddling and the old woman dancing!
