Thos. GREEN, Esq. of Whittington Hall, is appointed Sheriff for the County of Lancaster.
Robert ATKINSON, one of the poachers committed to Appleby gaol for poaching at Lowther, is admitted to bail. This is the person who
has given such information, as, it is supposed, will lead to detection of several others, both destroyers and purchasers of game.
One of the former, named John HEWIT, has been committed.
It appears by what passed in the House of Commons on Friday night, that the report of the retirement of the Right Hon. T. WALLACE
(of Carlton-Hall, in this county,) from the vice-presidency of the Board of Trade, is too well-founded. Besides the tribute paid to
the Rt. Hon. Gent.'s eminent services in the House by men of all parties, there have been meetings in a great many commercial towns,
at all of which the strongest regret was expressed that any circumstances should have arisen to deprive the country of a
continuation of those exertions which have done so much for its honour and prosperity.
The merchants, ship-owners, and others connected with the shipping interest in the Port of London, are about to present T. WALLACE,
Esq., M. P. with a piece of plate of the value of £500, as a testimony of his services rendered them as late Vice-President of the
Board of Trade.
Monday, the Spring Meeting of the Dumfries-shire Coursing Club took place at Ferneycleugh and Skipmyre, parish of Tinwald, when the
Cup was run for and won by the Marquis of Queensberry's Valiant. A great number of spectators were present; but the sport, owing to
the hardness of the ground, was not good.
A heifer, bred by James GRIEVE, Esq., ot Branxholm Park, Roxburghshire, was killed by Mr. F. DEANS, butcher, Hawick, on the 19th
inst., the four quarters of which weighed 75 st. 11 lbs., tallow 13 st. 7 lbs., and when in life 125 st. 10 lb. It was allowed by
judges to be one of the finest animals ever killed in that county.
On Monday last, Rear-Admiral Sir J. P. BERESFORD was elected to represent the town of Berwick in Parliament, vacant by the removal
of Lord Ossulston to the Upper House, in consequence of the death of his father, the late Earl Tankerville. As there was no other
candidate, the electron was unanimous; and Sir John, after the business of the day was concluded, entertained about 200 of the
electors. What has become of PARKINS?
The late snow was uncommonly severe in Northumberland, and on the east coast of Scotland. Travellers were detained in country inns
and places, till all the provisions were exhausted. Sir Carnaby HAGGERSTON, Bart. has hospitably entertained a large party of
strangers in this predicament, at his seat, at Haggerston.
On Wednesday last, a person crossing a field near Whickham, which had been very thick with snow, particularly near the hedges, but
which is much reduced since the thaw commenced, found among the snow, a covey of 12 partridges, which, from their appearance, seemed
to have been covered with snow when sleeping, and on being taken up, were quite frozen, but they all soon recovered on being placed
near the fire, and have since regained their liberty.Newcastle Courant.
The Lord Lieutenant of Dumfriesshire has been pleased to appoint Major CARRUTHERS, of Denbie, to be Lieutenant-Colonel of the
Annandale and Eskdale Regiment of Local Militia, in room of the late Lieut.-Colonel MURRAY.
On Saturday morning the 8th curt. about three o'clock, the brig Mary of Whitehaven, 175 tons per register, Capt. MANN, and a crew
consisting of nine men, struck on the Downan rocks, about two miles south of Ballantrae. They had no knowledge of the place they
were in, and had mistaken Corswall light-house for the one on the point of Ayr, Isle of Man. The jolly-boat was immediately lowered
down, when all hands got in except the captain and one man. The morning being dark, the sea running high, and the coast bold and
rocky, they could not find a creek in which they could land for more than a mile. Here they got ashore in safety, and went to the
nearest farm house for assistance. Afterwards the captain and the sailor were brought off the wreck by a rope which was fixed to the
rocks from the brig. Most of her materials will be saved, but the brig soon afterwards became a complete wreck. The vessel had been
from Whitehaven to Dublin with a cargo of coals, and was on her way back.
The sloop Marion, belonging to Allonby, having sailed from Workington for Liverpool, on the 31st ult., with a cargo of wheat, was
driven by foul weather to the Mull of Kinhoul, in the Highlands, where she was lost. Crew saved. We understand that the cargo was
insured.
The Alexander, BOADLE, which was on shore, at the entrance of Waterford river, has been got off, without damage, and carried into
Waterford.
The Henry, of Harrington, which was on shore near Strangford, has been got off without damage.
The Fullarton, from Ayr for Liverpool, is supposed to be lost on Hoyle Bank. The wreck of a sloop (wheat laden) was seen there, and
a trunk has been washed up which was shipped on board the Fullarton.
The Flora, MELDRUM, from Charleston for Liverpool, struck upon a ridge of rocks, about twelve miles from Holyhead, during the night
of the 11th instant, and is a complete wreck. The crew and passengers (Mr. and Mrs. JACKSON, and child, of Dublin) drowned. The
cargo consists principally of cotton, tar, and rum.
The ship Caledonian, ROBINSON, from Belfast to Charleston, has arrived safe, and landed her passengers all well.
The Newcastle papers present a melancholy account of losses amongst the shipping on that coast during the late storms of wind and
snow. No fewer than fifty vessels are said to have been driven on shore, a great number of which have become complete wrecks, and in
not a few instances either the whole or part of the unfortunate crews have perished.
The Content, REED, which was put on shore near Holyhead, on the night of the 7th inst. has since gone to pieces; all the crew saved.
