To the Editor of the Carlisle Patriot.

SIR,-It is with feelings of the utmost astonishment and indignation, that I have read in your paper of December 14th, a note
addressed to you, dated Workington, December 11th, and signed Jane DOWNWARD, stating my marriage which took place at Gretna on the
4th instant, and which I myself had inserted in your paper of the 7th following, to be an "erroneous assertion." Sir, I beg to
assure you, and hope you will make it known generally and as speedily as possible, that it is not an erroneous assertion, as I was
positively married on the above day at Gretna, which the clergyman, Mr. David LONG, who performed the ceremony, can sufficiently
attest. It is true I was married some years ago to a Lady in Essex; but she died about two years since whilst I was abroad-her
father's name is John BARNARD, of Woodham-water, near Danbury, and not William BARNARD, of Woodham-Mortimer, as stated by Jane
DOWNWARD. If she doubts the truth of this declaration, she knows where to apply for further information. In the mean while, should
any more notes of a similar scandalous and injurious tendency be sent you for insertion, I beg no notice may be taken of them, but
that you will treat such with the silent contempt they merit, as I am here ready always to answer to any charge which they (my
friends) may think proper to alledge against me. I am, Sir, your obedient servant,

                                                                                                         R. DOWNWARD.

George Inn, Penrith, Dec. 14, 1816.
