COURT OF KING'S BENCH, Nov. 21.
THE KING v. WILLIAM GIBSON.
This defendant, convicted at the late Cumberland Assizes for an assault on Revenue-officers, upon the border of Scotland, was
brought up for judgment. The assault was of an aggravated nature; but as the defendant had suffered six months' imprisonment, the
Court sentenced him to four months' imprisonment in the House of Correction at Carlisle; and to find security for his good behaviour
for five years, himself in £40, and two sureties in £20 each.
MONDAY, Nov. 25.
THE KING v. ADDISON.
Mr. BROUGHAM moved for a rule calling on the defendant, a tea-dealer, in a small village (Caldbeck) in Cumberland, to show cause why
a criminal information should not be filed against him. He applied on behalf of Captain BACKHOUSE, who had been an officer in the
85th Regiment of Foot, and in 1794 and 1795 served in Flanders and Holland, with great intrepidity and zeal. On no occasion had his
conduct been called in question, until he was directed, with seven others, to prefer charges against his commanding officer, who was
eventually acquitted, in consequence of which he with the others was forced to leave the regiment. There was no imputation whatever
at any time on his courage or honour, which could give occasion to the conduct of Mr. ADDISON. In the Autumn, Captain BACKHOUSE had
been with some ladies to look at a waterfall, and on his return passed through a field of Mr. ADDISON's. He received a notice not to
trespass, of which he so far did not complain; but which proceeded, after some insinuations respecting his "modesty," to denominate
him "a cowardly incendiary and no gentleman." The Court granted a rule to show cause.
