It will be seen that the late gales have caused considerable damage on the neighbouring coasts;-we especially refer to our shipping
intelligence for the particulars of the loss of a Greenock brig, and the rescue of the melancholy remnant of the crew by a Carlisle
vessel. The weather continues an alternation of storms and calms.
The Bishop of Chester arrived at his house in the Abbey, in this city, on Thursday. His Lordship intends to preach in the Cathedral
on Sunday morning next; and to open the Lecture at St. Cuthbert's in the evening of the same day.
The Hon. Col. LOWTHER lately fell from his horse while hunting with the Cottesmore hounds near Braceborough Wood, Lincolnshire.
Though severely bruised, no bones were broken; and the prompt and skilful treatment of Dr. WILLIS is likely to prevent permanently
bad effects, the common result of severe accidents. The Colonel and Lady Eleanor have for some time past been on a visit to the Hon.
Col. MONKTON, at Furshade, Northamptonshire.
On Saturday, Mr. D. CARRICK, Banker of this city, while crossing the street, was knocked down by a gig, (driven by a gentleman with
considerable velocity,) and the wheel passed over his body; the consequence was, that his nose was broken, one hand much hurt, and
several parts of his body more or less bruised. It does not appear that the driver of the vehicle was to blame.
So many idle persons prowl about the country, preying upon the credulity of the public at this time, that the Mayor has come to the
resolution of committing all strangers found begging in this city, for a limited period.
On the night of the 9th inst. a man named Thos. LITTLE was knocked down and trampled upon, in a disreputable house kept by a woman
called M'CAN, in the Willow Holme, and his life is despaired of. A warrant was granted at the public office, on Wednesday, against
one of the offenders.
The celebrated John BARR, orator, radical secretary, and a long etcetera of distinguishing attributes, was held to bail at the
police-office, on Saturday, for entering the house of Mary GILL, striking her, and riotously conducting himself.
A basket of butter, defective in weight, two pair of steelyards, belonging to fish-sellers, and from forty to fifty fraudulent
weights of different kinds, were seized in the market last Saturday, by order of the Mayor: and a sharp look-out will be kept in
future.
Killed at Wigton, by Mr. R. TWENTYMAN, a bullock of the short-horned breed, aged 3 years and 3 months, which weighed 77 stone 5lb.
without the offal, and had 12 stone of tallow, 16lb. to the stone. The animal was bred and fed by J. SAUL, Esq. Green-Row.
In some parts of this and the neighbouring counties, second crops of apples and gooseberries have been gathered.
The following inquisitions have been taken before Richard LOWRY, Esq.-At Waverton, on the 15th instant, on the body of John DELAP,
aged 80 years, who was found dead in a privy there. The deceased had been unwell for some time past, and there were no marks on his
body; the Jury therefore brought in a verdict, died by the visitation of God.-At Cumwhitton on the 18th inst. in view of the body of
Mary HALL, aged 68 years, who was drowned in the river Cairn, in that parish, having accidentally fallen into the water while
crossing a foot-bridge on Saturday last: verdict, accidental death. On the same day at Welton, parish of Sebergham, on the body of
John LAMB, a child fifteen weeks old, who was found dead by his mother, at her side, when she awoke in the morning of Sunday last,
having been in an unhealthy state for a considerable period. Verdict, died a natural death.
