It is intended, we understand, to open St. Cuthbert's Church, for Sunday Evening service, on the 24th instant, and the Bishop of
Chester is expected to preach the first sermon. Prayers only, after that time, will be read in the afternoon. Would it not be well
to light the church with gas?
Mr. Alderman WOOD arrived at the Bush Inn, in this City, on Wednesday evening, on his return from Scotland; and departed on Thursday
afternoon for Penrith, intending to gratify his daughters with a visit to the principal Lakes; the season, however, is fully a month
too far advanced. The worthy Alderman travels in a sober, commercial-like style, and makes no attempts at political display.
According to accounts from all quarters, he seems shy of old correspondents.
Great quantities of rain have fallen in this neighbourhood since Saturday last: strong gusts of wind also prevailed at intervals.
Carlisle Martinmas hiring-day, on Saturday, was very numerously attended, as usual, by servants of both sexes The demand was not
equal to the supply, and wages were deemed low. Men, for the winter half-year, from to £4 to £4 10s.; some few obtained £5; and some
even refused that sum. Women were ready to engage at almost any rate. Some took 30s. for the half-year, but they were neither very
strong nor very skilful. The general run was from 50s. to £3; a few obtained £3 10s. to £4. The lads and lasses seemed full of
spirit, and enjoyed themselves, in spite of care or the times.
On Thursday morning last, the brig Eleanor, 184 tons burthen, was drawn up the Patent Slip, at Whitehaven, an inclined plane of
nearly 100 yards, in about one hour and a quarter. A vast concourse of people assembled to view this novel improvement in mechanics,
and were highly gratified in witnessing the process. A band of music played several favourite airs, the people cheering at
intervals; and a number of ladies and gentlemen partook of wine and cake, and ale was given to the populace. The day was remarkably
fine for the season.
The body of Mr. R. BELL, master of the Hope, of Maryport, thrown overboard by the main-boom, off Seaton on the 29th ult., was cast
ashore at Maryport, on the 12th inst.
Mary KELLY, of Fish-houses, Pendicles, a young woman of 18, who had lived servant in the Abbey Holm, was unfortunately drowned on
the afternoon of Saturday last, in crossing the Solway Firth, to the Scotch side, from Bowness, in a cart. She was thrown out of the
vehicle by a sudden jerk, in a place where the depth of the water rendered turning the horse's head a matter of necessity. The
character of the deceased was excellent; but she is not more regretted on her own account than that of her widowed mother, who has
been long highly respected for her piety and exemplary conduct.
On Saturday, a young man from England (a bridegroom) was thrown out of a jaunting-car, or gig, within half a mile of Gretna Green,
and had his arm broken. He and his bride were on their return from Annan (where they had been married), accompanied by a male and
female friend; and although all were thrown out at the same time, the "Master of the Feast" was the only one who suffered.
The subscribers to the Whitehaven Dispensary, intend to place a portrait of Dr. DIXON in the room in which the annual meetings are
held. It is probable that that rising artist, Mr. Geo. SHEFFIELD, will be employed to paint it.
Mr. BOADLE, master the Scipio of Whitehaven, who met with the accident at Dublin, as stated in our last, is recovering.
The 'literary remains' of the late Stephen KEMBLE, Esq., are about to be collected and published.
A tradesman, the father of a pretty numerous family, had his leg broken in two places on Saturday evening, a little to the East of
Gretna Rigg toll-bar, by a cart-wheel, as he was attempting to stop the horse, which had galloped off in a fright, in consequence of
coming in contact with another horse and cart.
At Appleby Martinmas fair, on Saturday last, a greater number of servants attended than of late years. Wages for men were from £4
10s. to £7; the highest price for women was £3; but many of them were led to take whatever was offered. Great numbers of both sexes
went away unhired. The day was very favourable, and notwithstanding the depression of wages, both men and maidens seemed at every
turn to wear happy faces, and to enjoy the dance with as much delight as ever they were observed to do on such an occasion.
A carrot was lately taken up in a field belonging to R. TOWERS, Esq. of Duddon Grove, in this county, which weighed 5½ lbs. without
the top, and was 23 inches long.
At Egremont hiring, on Saturday, there was a slack demand for servants: those engaged obtainedstrong men, from £6 to £7; able
women, £3 to £4.
Calderbridge Hunt, on the 4th inst., was not so numerously attended as on many former occasions, but afforded good sport. In the
evening, twenty-nine gentlemen dined at Mrs. GUNSON's.
Mr. Isaac CHESTER's mill, at Beckermont, near Whitehaven, was destroyed by fire on the night of the 7th instant, but in what manner
the accident originated is not known; loss, £1100, no part insured.
A Scotch ewe was killed at Gosforth, last week, by Mr. J. DIXON, butcher, which weighed 16½ lbs. per quarter, and produced 73½ lbs.
of fat.
At Sunderland statute hiring-day, on the 2nd inst. farm servants' wages advanced considerably, in consequence of an increased demand
for able-bodied persons of both sexes.
The united ages of three debtors confined in Durham gaol amount to 237 years.
The Tread Mill is complete in Lancaster Castle, and the convicts are now daily made to ascend the summitless steps. This is a truly
classical punishment. It continually reminds one of Sisyphus.
On the 4th inst. McMULLAN, the young pedestrian, started at noon, to walk 102 miles in 24 successive hours, on the walls of Berwick,
and accomplished his task nearly 12 minutes within the time. Another McMULLAN performed the same feat at Monkwearmouth, in 23½
hours.
