Bible Society.—In our last page will be found a very ample report of the Anniversary Meeting of the Cumberland and Carlisle Bible
Society, holden at the Coffee-House on Monday evening. A history of the formation and progress of this excellent Institution has
been written by the Rev. J. OWEN, one of the Secretaries. Of this work it has been remarked, that the historian is worthy of the
subject, and the subject worthy of the historian.—See advt.

The Treasurer of the Infant Clothing Society begs leave to acknowledge a handsome donation of one guinea from an anonymous friend to
the Institution, towards forming a fund for supplying the members with blankets at a reduced price.

On Wednesday morning last, J. W. MEEKLEY, journeyman to Mr. Jos. HENRY, butcher, in this city, performed a pedestrian feat on the
Penrith road which has excited some notice. He entered into a bet of two guineas that he would run a mile in five minutes; on trial
he performed the distance in 4¾ minutes; a quarter of a minute within the time. His friends are so sanguine of his powers as a
runner, that they have offered to back him for five or ten guineas against any man in Cumberland, to run two miles on our
race-course at the ensuing Carlisle Meeting.

Corn harvest commenced in the neighbourhood of Armathwaite this day se'nnight.

On Monday afternoon, the 19th instant, a house was discovered to be on fire in the Back Street, Maryport, occasioned by the chimney
of an adjoining house being set on fire; but, by the exertions of the neighbours, it was got under without any material damage being
done.

During the past week the weather has been more favourable than of late. It is astonishing that notwithstanding the heavy rains which
we have experienced, the corn stands as erect as ever in most places; and if we are blessed with fine weather, we shall have an
abundant harvest.

Moresby Church, in this county, was again broken into last week, and robbed of the covers of several cushions, &c. These were the
only articles that the villains could carry away, as the former robbery rendered the Churchwardens cautious.

On Wednesday evening last, as Mr. Joseph LEACH, of Marr, near Castlecarrock, was returning from Brampton market, he unfortunately
missed his road, it being quite dark, and fell into the river Gelt, at a place called High Bridge, where the banks are very steep
and rocky, and was killed on the spot.

On Saturday last, an old woman, residing at Milton, near Brampton, called Isabella ROBSON, put a period to her existence by drowning
herself in a small Brook, called Quarry Beck, at a place where the water was not more than six inches deep. She having been in a low
desponding way for some time back, the Coroner's Jury returned a verdict of Lunacy.

It is the intention to have Charity Sermons preached throughout the country, in aid of the subscriptions' raising for the relief of
the manufacturing and industrious poor.

At the last General Quarter Sessions of the Peace, for the county of Westmorland, holden at Appleby, the Rev. Edw. JACKSON, of
Bolton, was chosen Chaplain to the county gaol, vice the Rev. James METCALFE, resigned.

Seven of the rioters who attacked the house. of Mr. HORROCKS, M. P. at Preston, last week, are in custody.

Last week, at Farnley, in Yorkshire, as Mr. F. HAWKSWORTH, and his brother the Rev. R. HAWKSWORTH, were out shooting together, the
latter was shot in the head by the accidental going off of his brother's gun, which caused his death in a few hours.

It may, perhaps, be rendering a service to the inhabitants of other towns, by cautioning them against a person calling himself
Signor DE MONTFORT, a professor of the pyrotechnic art, who after amusing a number of people with an exhibition of fire works, at
Lenton Coffee House, on Monday evening, contrived to decamp, in the course of the same night, with the whole of the contributions he
had received, without paying a penny of the expenses incurred. We are informed that he practised a similar manœuvre lately at
Carlisle.—Nottingham Journal.

criminal trials for Newcastle finished on Monday. Daniel BRADY, Thomas and Jane GRAINGER, for coining; James O'NEIL, for highway
robbery; and Wm. BEST, for theft, received sentence of death. There were a few minor sentences of no importance.
