Bible Society.—The Anniversary of the Cumberland and Carlisle Auxiliary Bible Society will be holden at the Coffee House, in this
city, on the evening of Monday the 19th inst. A numerous assemblage is expected.

Sheriff's Dinner.—By reference to our front page our Readers will observe the Sheriff's invitation to the gentlemen summoned on the
Grand Jury, and those in the commission of the peace, for Wednesday the 21st inst. at the Coffee House, on which day the Judges will
enter. In our last, by error, we announced the above for the 28th.

Boxing.—The great impending battle between CARTER and OLIVER will, for a certainty, take place at our Races, the friends of the
respective combatants having deposited 50gs. a side, which are to be forfeited by the party failing to produce his man. The odds in
Northumberland, South of Scotland, and Cumberland, are generally in favour of CARTER, but we understand the reverse is the case in
the South of England. It is expected that we shall have a greater assemblage of the sporting world here at the ensuing Races than
ever was remembered.

Coals.—We are informed that the Earl of Lonsdale has reduced the price of Coals 2s. 6d. per waggon, which, it is supposed, will be
at least £12,000 per annum from his Lordship's income. His Lordship would reduce the price still lower if the exigency of the times
required it. This generosity will have the most beneficial effect on the shipping and commercial interests of the county of
Cumberland, and will call down on his Lordship the blessings and thanks of thousands: it has caused much joy at Whitehaven.

Ann FORSTER, and Jane M'DONALD, of this city, have been committed for trial, having on Saturday last, in the middle of the day,
stolen from the warehouse of Mr. Wm. WOOD, one 10lb. bundle of cotton yarn.

The town of Penrith has sustained a severe shock during the past week from the house of B. SMITH & Co. having suspended payments, by
which a great many are seriously involved.

A distressing accident happened in this city on Monday morning last. A soldier's widow with two children, one of them an infant,
took her station on a baggage cart destined to follow the route of the 5th Dragoon Guards, before the horse was put to the vehicle.
The driver, wishing to ascertain if the cart was properly loaded, lifted up the shafts, and the weight being too much behind weighed
it down, in consequence of which the woman, children and baggage, fell into the street together. The infant was killed on the spot;
the second wounded in the groin, and the woman herself bruised considerably; the effects of which were heightened by the fate of her
child. The woman's husband belonged to the 5th, but was killed in the battle of Salamanca, and thus her situation is rendered still
more distressing. We are happy, however, to learn that several benevolent individuals (among the most active of whom is Mr. WASTEL)
have collected a considerable sum for the poor woman in order to assuage her wounded feelings while here, and to afford her the
means of going home when she gets better.

The weather in this neighbourhood still continues unseasonable and showery. Hay harvest is general; the rains have made a a great
improvement in the crop.—The Corn harvest will be late. We believe the Wheat has sustained little or no injury, but we are told that
Barley and Oats are likely to be light on cold wet land.

We are much gratified to understand, that a plan for establishing a society in this town, for the purpose of improving the natural,
political, and moral history of the county, and the neighbouring district of Low Furness, will be shortly proposed to the
consideration of the public. An establishment of the kind cannot fail of proving highly interesting to the members of it, as well as
of importance to literature at large; for though Westmorland is but small in extent, it is rich in rare objects belonging to the
animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms, many of which are imperfectly explored. Besides this, the mountainous, aspect of the
country, contrasted with that of Low Furness, makes the meteorology of the country interesting in a high degree. If we advert to the
remote political history of the county, the antiquarian must perceive that it is rich in research; its proximity to Scotland, and
the once Celtic Kingdom of Cumberland, the Saxon idiom of the provincial dialect, the customs and sentiments peculiar to the people,
are topics, the discussion of which is calculated to throw light on the history of manners, and consequently on the history of
man.--Kendal p.

At York Assizes last week, a qui tam action was brought against Thomas HORTON, Esq. of Howroyde, near Halifax, he having performed
various magisterial acts without being possessed of the property required by law as a qualification. A verdict was given against the
defendant; damages £100 and 40s. costs.

At York Assizes Elizabeth WARD, 17 years of age, was convicted of the horrid crime of administering poison to her sister, and is to
suffer death—a sister and a younger brother were the chief witnesses!

By an act of the last session of Parliament, chap. 58. a penalty of £200 is imposed on any brewer using sugar, or any ingredient
whatever, but malt or hops, in the process of brewing. A penalty of £500 is also imposed upon druggists, or any person whatever
selling to a brewer any ingredient of any kind, to be used in the process of brewing.

Captain THOMSON, of the Atlas, belonging to the Clyde, and the captain of a Whitehaven vessel, said to be the Martha Brae, have
arrived at Greenock, in the Ariel, from Newfoundland, by whom, we are sorry to learn, that both their vessels have been lost on Cape
Florida.
