LOCAL MILITIA.-Those persons who belong to the Cumberland Local Militia, will find some information on the subject, by referring to
the Advertisement, in the first page of this paper.

In the City of Durham, the heaps of mud collected together by the scavengers, have been ordered to be taken away before sunset. This
excellent regulation would be an advantage in Carlisle-for if a person attempts to cross the streets after dark, the chances are two
to one against him, but he runs into the middle of a heap of dirt, which reaches half way to the knee. These heaps have been most
characteristically denominated Man Traps!

The following are the conditions of the Leases, by which an extensive estate in the county of Cumberland is managed:-In no case,
more than one grain crop to be taken in succession, but in all cases a fallow, turnips, or potatoes, to intervene between two crops
of grain. Ten pounds of clover seeds, with half a peck of rye-grass at least, in all cases, to be sown with every crop of grain
after the fallow, or fallow green crop, and to lay at least two years in grass. And every year, at least, half the number of acres
of land well and effectually fallowed either with a green hoed crop or dead fallow, as may be, under grain or pulse of all sorts.
Shall eat and consume all vestures upon the premises, and keep all the buildings, gates, and fences in good and effectual repair.
Shall in no case pare and burn any grass land without leave in writing.-Who can say that Cumberland landlords do not know how to let
land?

John DALES, Esq. has been elected Mayor of Durham, for the ensuing year.

Lately, at Murton, in Lamplugh, a woman of the name of TELFORD, left her house with three children in it. During her absence they
scalded themselves in such a manner, with a pan full of water placed near the fire, as to occasion the death of one of them.

Mr. W. A. MITCHELL, son of Mr. MITCHELL, proprietor of the Tyne Mercury, was on the last day of last Term, admitted into the
honourable Society of the Inner Temple, and last week he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, &c.

GRETNA GREEN.-It will, no doubt, be satisfactory to those who wish to be married in haste, to be informed that it is no longer
necessary to take a journey to that remote place, Gretna Green, as an ingenious dissenting clergyman, the pastor of a respectable
congregation in Sunderland, has devised an excellent plan for evading the marriage act, and has actually carried such plan into
execution, as will appear by the following facts, which may be relied on. A private in the 93d regiment, which marched from
Sunderland a few days ago, having gained the affections of a young woman, there, the parties agreed to enter into the holy state of
matrimony, and accordingly gave in their names to the parish clerk, to have the banns published; they were published, and but once,
when the regiment received its route for Ireland; the gallant soldier afraid of being separated from the object of his affection
before he could be lawfully married according to the forms of the church of England, went to the above mentioned Reverend Gentleman
for his advice, when after a little consideration, it struck him, that if the parties were in a boat upon the river, they would be
out of the jurisdiction of the marriage act, and might be married according to the forms of the Kirk of Scotland; he mentioned the
circumstance, the parties instantly agreed with him on the point of law; a boat was hired, the soldier and his girl, accompanied by
the priest and two witnesses, embarked, and were rowed down between the piers, where the ceremony was performed by the Rev.
Gentleman, and the happy couple thus united, set off the next morning on their march to Ireland.-Durham Paper.

The Duke of Northumberland, in consideration of the general distress and difficulties under which the farmers of the county are now
labouring, has given directions to his commissioners, to allow to all his tenants 25 per cent. out of their half-yearly rent, which
is to be paid at the ensuing audit in March.

On Wednesday last, was launched from the building-yard of Messrs. John PEAT & Co., of Maryport, a fine new vessel called the Aurora,
burthen per register 212 tons, for Captain Jonathan NELSON.

The brig Gemini, SIM, belonging to Maryport, has arrived at Messina in 25 days from Liverpool, all well.

The brig Bolton, BEWMAN, last week arrived at Newry from Miramichi with timber; she being the last vessel belonging to Maryport, in
the North American trade (for last year), and all have come in without material damage.
