We are sorry to hear that Lord Carlisle lies at Castle Howard in so dangerous a state as to preclude all hope of his
recovery.-Globe.
Mr. FAWCETT, M. P. still continues to recover. We hope that in a few weeks we shall be enabled to announce his complete restoration
to health.
The following Magistrates have been added to the Court-house and Bridge Committee, viz. Sir F. F. VANE, Bart., W. BROWNE, Esq. of
Tallentire-hall, and the Rev. Mr. MATTHEWS, of Wigton.
MR. MURRAY'S CHEMICAL LECTURES.-On Wednesday evening last, this Gentleman commenced a course of six Lectures, at Mr. NORMAN's
Assembly Room, the third of which concluded last night, and the remaining three will not be delivered until the week after next,
namely, on the nights of Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday the 12th, 13th, and 15th instant.* These Lectures we understand, will be
uncommonly interesting. The 4th will embrace the most brilliant experiments on Potassium, and Iodine-two substances very recently
discovered, the phoenomena of which are entirely new in Carlisle, so far as it respects actual experiment. The latter was a short
time since announced by Sir Humphrey DAVY from Paris, and by the operation of heat, rises in a superb violet-coloured vapour, and
immediately condenses unaltered into beautiful dark glistening crystals. These three remaining lectures abound with interest, and
will excite no small share of public attention.-On Thursday evening, Mr. M. exhibited one of the phoenomena of Potassium, throwing
this metal on a disc of ice; the effect was beautiful and interesting. Flame, of a red and violet colour, was immediately elicited,
the ice perforated, and the result was proved to be a solution of caustic Potassa.-He also introduced another experiment, which,
from being founded on a recent and well-known circumstance, deserves particular notice. During the prevalence of the late tremendous
gales, the Leipsic was in a perilous situation on the bar of Yarmouth; the waves breaking over her prevented the application of a
match to the gun for a signal of distress: Lieut. WOODYEAR happened to have a tube filled with a mixture of oxymuriate of Potassa
and Sugar-candy, which he brought in contact with sulphuric acid (oil vitriol), thus producing flame, and enabling him to give the
signal which eventually saved the vessel and crew. This circumstance was fully proved and elucidated by Mr. MURRAY, in an actual
experiment, which we hope will be impressed upon the public mind as one of those important objects effected by modern chemistry, and
which, if properly applied in real life, will be productive of great, and at present, unforeseen advantages. As a Lecturer, we have
no hesitation in saving that Mr. MURRAY is very superior, and takes great pains to be fully comprehended-a matter of no little
import to the younger part of an audience, or in fact to any class of persons, whether they attend for instruction or mere
amusement. He seems completely master of his subject, and his apparatus is of a superior order, and adapted to the most improved
state of the science.-See the Advertisement.

* Mr. MURRAY adopts this plan, in order not to interfere with the Lectures on Antiquities, &c. by Mr. STACKHOUSE, which commence on
Monday next, at the Assembly-Room, Coffee-House, and which we announce in the front page of this paper.

As the workmen, this week, were pumping the water from the farthest arch of the Rickergate Bridge, they discovered one of the large
foundation stones, near the centre of the arch, undermined and displaced, it was however immediately restored without difficulty.
Workmen are now employed in making some temporary repairs to Caldew Bridge, damaged during the late floods. A new one must be
erected as soon it is found convenient or practicable so to do.
Our readers are requested to notice that a general meeting of the subscribers to the Carlisle Dispensary is announced to take place
at the Town Hall, on Tuesday next.-See Advt.
We are sorry to hear that Mr. SMITH, dancing master, met with an accident on Wednesday morning, which has caused the loss of the
second and third fingers of his left hand, and part of the fourth. He was shooting, and put into his gun an extra charge, to fire at
a wild duck, which burst it and caused the accident.
A boy sliding on the ice, yesterday, near Caldew Bridge, fell in, and had a narrow escape. We mention this to caution any one
against going on the ice when not properly formed, for a great number of persons, during the present winter, have lost their lives
in this inconsiderate manner.
