The celebrated Dr. BELL honored this city with his presence last week, during which he paid particular attention to the Boys' and
Girls' Schools, founded on his plan, and gave the Committee of Ladies proper instructions for the future governance of the Girls'
School. The committee entertaining a due sense of the Rev. Doctor's kindness and attention, have handsomely voted him their
thanks.-Vide adv.
The First Carlisle Winter Assembly took place on Thursday Evening last at the Crown & Mitre, which, we are sorry to remark was,
contrary to expectation, rather thinly attended.-The music was good, and the dancing kept up with grace and spirit.
SALMON.-The late stormy weather on the coast, though productive of much damage in other respects, was very propitious for the
commencement of Salmon fishing, which took place last week. The weather drove the fish up the rivers, and in the Eden, at this
season, they were never known to be finer or more plenty. Indeed this is proved by the low price, for our readers must have observed
that we announced it in our last paper as 2s. per lb.
In our last paper we stated that part of that old and decayed structure Botcherby Bridge gave way on the preceding Wednesday, but
that hopes were entertained by some of the possibility of repairing the damage. This we presume will be precluded by a further fall
of stones which took place on Wednesday last, just after a cart passed over it, and the Bridge is now in so very dangerous a state
that we hope no persons with carts, coaches, &c. will venture over it.
Last Monday afternoon, the Wellington Coach which runs between Whitehaven and this City, was upset in Caldewgate, owing to the axle
tree giving way, and we are sorry to say that in consequence Mrs. BRISCO, of Langrigg near Wigton, received several severe
contusions on her head and face, but we understand no danger is likely to result from them; we believe all the other passengers
escaped without injury.
During the late inclement weather, the Earl of Carlisle's donation of one cart load of coals to each poor Housekeeper, in the town
ol Brampton, was distributed.
A very seasonable donation of twelve cart loads of coals has also been distributed to the prisoners in Carlisle gaol.
The Farmers' Journal after noticing the intended establishment of Cattle Markets at Longtown, thus concludes,-"It is well known to
our readers, that this is the chief line through which the vast herds of Scotch cattle pass into England; and as Carlisle has been
hitherto the great mart where they collected, previous to their being again dispersed over the South, and the inhabitants derived
much advantage from it, they have very naturally taken the alarm, and just begin to discover that they have not afforded those
facilities and conveniences which were calculated to insure a continuance of the benefits which they may now be able sufficiently to
appreciate only by their loss."
On Tuesday the 2nd, Wednesday the 3rd, Thursday the 4th, and Monday the 8th instant, were held the Anniversary Meetings of the
Branch Bible Societies of Keswick, Cockermouth, Maryport, and Wigton; and on Friday the 5th that of the Auxiliary Bible Society of
Whitehaven. Of the meetings at Cockermouth, Maryport and Whitehaven, we are informed that they were numerously attended, and evinced
the increasing interest taken by the public in these valuable institutions. Among the Gentlemen present at the different meetings,
and who exerted themselves anxiously in this noble cause, we noticed John CHRISTIAN Esq. of Unerigg Hall; the Rev. J. FAWCETT, of
Carlisle; Mr. SIBSON, of Crosscannonby; the Rev. Mr. ROSE, of Whitehaven; and the Rev. Mr. CHURCH, of Hensingham.
The "Sisterly Society" of Workington held their anniversary on New Year's Day, on which occasion they attended divine service and
heard an excellent discourse from the Rev. P. HOW, A. M. This flourishing and useful Society consists of 213 members.
Viscount Galway has appointed the Rev. Roger CARUS WILSON, B. D. son of C. W. WILSON, Esq. of Casterton Hall, Westmorland, his
Lordship's domestic chaplain.
The Whitehaven Theatre has closed for the season, having been well supported.
WRECK.-During the late storm, the Good Intent, HEWETSON, master, of Maryport, went on shore in Mullock's Bay, coast of Scotland. The
master and crew got safe on shore, but the former having hopes of saving the vessel, collected some seamen, and went off where she
lay, to endeavour to get her into the mouth of the bay. As soon as they got on board, the boat broke loose from the stern, and
drifted ashore: this placed the men in a most perilous condition, for the vessel was fast sinking, and they called to the shore for
some men to bring off the boat again or they must all perish. Three men obeyed the summons, but just as the whole were in the boat
it upset, and three out of the nine were drowned. Two were natives of Maryport, belonging to a brig then laying in Manxman's lake,
but we have not heard their names.
At the Quarter Sessions holden at Newcastle, on Wednesday last the 10th inst. Todd WATSON, late Cashier to the Tyne Iron Company,
for embezzling the property of his employers, was sentenced to fourteen years' transportation.-Thomas RENNISON, late in the employ
of John RENWICK, & Co. for the like offence; and two of the Seamen concerned in the late disturbances were sentenced to twelve
months' hard labour in the house of correction.
Wednesday se'ennight, the dwelling-house of a Mr. LEESON, draper in Douglas, Isle of Man, was totally destroyed by fire, together
with the household furniture and wearing apparel.
Mr. SOUTHEY, the Poet Laureate is engaged upon a History of the late war in Spain and Portugal, which will form two quarto volumes.
The brig Isabella, WALTON, belonging to Maryport, arrived off that place on Wednesday from North America with timber bound to
Bowness.
