CARLISLE LIBRARY.

At a General Meeting of the Subscribers to the Carlisle Library, held at the Coffee-house, on Monday Evening, January 3, a Proposal
was made to increase the price of the Ticket from 4 Guineas to 4½ Guineas, which on a division, was negatived.

The Notice, regularly fixed up in the Library Room, proposing an alteration of the Rule for chusing the Committee, having been read,
was referred to Ballot, Richard SUTTON, John WALDIE, and J. CONNELL, Scrutineers, who reported that the old Rule was confirmed by a
Majority of 38 to 25.

The following Gentlemen were appointed Scrutineers to examine the Votes of the Committee for the ensuing year: viz., Messrs. W.
HODGSON, C. BROWN, R. SUTTON, J. WALDIE, and J. CONNELL, who reported that the following Gentlemen were elected by the Numbers
affixed to their Names: Mr. DOBINSON, 38; Captain HALTON, 35; Dr. JAMES, 35; Mr. PITT, 32; Mr. T. STORDY, 24; Mr. Joseph FORSTER,
21; Mr. Thomas WILSON, 20.

The above excellent institution has flourished in so eminent a degree since its foundation in 1768, that it now may be justly
regarded as a prominent object in the city of Carlisle, as well as a great honor to it. It was set on foot by a few individuals well
acquainted with the influence and charms of Literature, and has ever since been supported by the most respectable Ladies and
Gentlemen, in a manner highly honorable to them. The books were first arranged, and a catalogue made at the close of the year
1799.—The increase in the last four years will be marked by the following statement:—In 1812, there were 153 Subscribers, income
£101, 8s.; 1813, 159 Subscribers, income of £150, 11s.; 1814, 163 Subscribers, income £169 : 7 : 6.; 1815, 165 Subscribers, income
£144, 12s. The works consist of an excellent selection in all departments of Literature and Science, and the regulations seem drawn
up with due regard to the well-being of the whole—highly worthy the attention of all residents who are not Members.
