On Thursday night last, or early yesterday morning, the Candle House of Mr. J. M. HEAD, situate in Water Street, in this city, was
broken into by the means of a back window which was forced open, and a considerable quantity of candles stolen thereout. We are
sorry to say the offender or offenders have not yet been discovered.
The prisoners in Carlisle gaol, returns [sic] thanks to a person unknown, for 3 Guineas, which will be distributed among them in
Butcher's meat.
Friday se'nnight, Ann DUGAN, a girl of about 15 years of age, employed in the manufactory of Mr. BENTLEY, at Denton-holme Head,
unfortunately received so much injury in the machinery, that she died on Monday, in great agony. She and another girl, we are
informed, were playing in the manufactory, when the clothes of her companion were caught in a wheel that was left uncovered, being
under repair,DUGAN hastened to extricate her friend, in which she succeeded, but in so doing, was caught herself in a similar
manner, and fell a victim.
Wednesday the 27th ult. being the festival of St. John the Evangelist, the Lodge of Harmony, Carlisle, No. 311, held their annual
meeting at the Crown and Mitre inn to celebrate that day, when a numerous and respectable company of the Masonic Body, partook of a
most excellent dinner, George BLAMIRE, Esq. Provincial Grand Master for the county, in the Chair. In the evening the Lodge was
visited by a deputation from the Lodge of Union, who had assembled at the King's Head on the same occasion, and the visit was
afterwards returned by a deputation from the Lodge of Harmony accompanied by the T. G. M., and the evening was spent with that
conviviality and good humour which always pervade the Masonic Board.
On Saturday last, Dr. HEYSHAM, as a Magistrate of this county, was served with a notice signed John MACHELL, steward to his Grace
the Duke of Devonshire, in which notice he and the other Magistrates of the county, are discharged from cutting up, digging and
taking away any soil from, or laying earth. rubbish, or stones, &c. on certain lands and premises the property of the Duke of
Devonshire, called Bank Head, and the Sands, situate in the parishes of Saint Mary, and Stanwix. He was also at the same time,
served with a similar notice, signed by Richard LOWRY, and Jane SMITH, farmers and occupiers of the said premises.

On New Year's Day, a quantity of oatmeal was distributed among the various poor families of Brampton, given according to annual
custom, by the Vicar of that parish.
On Saturday night last, John TWEDDELL, a resident of Tarraby, aged 23 years, and nephew of Mr. TWEDDELL, carrier, was taken up into
a cart from a public house at the Grove, very much intoxicated, and tied fast to prevent him from falling out. But when the cart
arrived at Tarraby he was found to have expired on the road.
We understand that the body of a man was washed on shore at Bowness, during the storm of last week.
We understand that Mr. Thomas HUDSON, and Mr. STUDHOLME, jun. land surveyor, have valued the field called Bank Head Close, situate
at Stanwix, the property of his Grace the Duke of Devonshire, at the sum of £500 per acre.
The Earl of Lonsdale's birth day was celebrated at Whitehaven yesterday se'nnight with great festivity. At break of day flags were
displayed from the usual places, and the shipping in the harbour. At one o'clock a Royal Salute was fired by the Whitehaven Local
Artillery, from the New Quay, in the presence of a great multitude, the attendance of whom was not prevented by the incessant and
heavy rain. In the afternoon two large parties of gentlemen dined at the Golden Fleece, and the Black Lion, where excellent dinners
were served up by the respective hosts. After dinner the usual toasts, songs, &c. were given, and the evening was spent in much
harmony. There were also many private parties on the occasion, in the town.
