CARLISLE CATTLE MARKETS.
The Committee employed in investigating the best means for promoting the prosperity and increase of our Cattle Fairs and Markets
will hold a meeting this day at the Town Hall, at two o'clock, for the purpose of arranging their REPORT, which they are to make at
the GENERAL MEETING, to be holden at the same time and place, on Saturday next, the 6th of April; the Report will be then publicly
read, and a very numerous assemblage is expected. The gentlemen of the Committee have been assiduous in their enquiries, and there
can be little doubt but their plans will meet with the approval of the public, and conduce to the accomplishment of the important
object held in view. We expect to have the pleasure of laying this Report before the public after it has been submitted to the
general meeting. Perhaps there are few cities and towns where the spirit of improvement is more requisite than in Carlisle. Abundant
objects obtrude themselves which require the "prudent hand of revision"; and we have well-founded hopes that the same spirit which
dictated the present proceedings will extend to other departments, and not cease to operate until nothing more remains to be
done.-It is impossible that such a task can be confided to persons more able, and we think we may say more willing, than many of the
gentlemen whose names appear on the Committee. Public expectation is now roused, and we feel assured it will not be disappointed; at
least, as it regards those objects over which individuals have influence and controul.
We are authorized to state, that there will be an Assembly at the Coffee House, in honour of the marriage of the Princess Charlotte
of Wales. The particulars of which will be published in due time.
A meeting of those persons interested in the Leather Tax, will take place in Workington on Wednesday next.-See advt.
At the latter end of last week there were fifty-nine ploughs employed at the same time, in Blackhall Holme. This was occasioned by
the friendly assistance offered by neighbours to the occupier of the Holme, who has lately entered on the estate, and consequently
the business of the farm was in a backward condition.
A mare belonging to -- GIBSON, a cartman of Newcastle, dropped a foal on Saturday last, with three legs, which lived only a few
hours. The fore leg had two hoofs.
The assizes for the County of Lancaster commenced on Saturday last, at Lancaster: there were 70 criminal offences, and 170 civil
causes entered for trial.
