TOWN HALL, CARLISLE, MARCH 9, 1816. 

 

AT a MEETING of the Principal Inhabitants, Merchants, and Farmers of this City and Neighbourhood, convened for the Purpose of
considering the best means of Improving the MARKETS and FAIRS for HORSES and CATTLE, and also the propriety of Establishing a Market
for FAT CATTLE:

RESOLVED,-That this Meeting is fully convinced of the necessity of some Regulation and Improvement in our Markets and Fairs, from
their importance to the Prosperity of the Agricultural and Mercantile Interests of this City and the surrounding District. 

 

RESOLVED,-That the following Gentlemen be appointed a Committee to take the Subject fully into Consideration, and Report the result
of their Deliberations to an Adjournment of this Meeting, to be held on SATURDAY the 6th of APRIL.-That they have power to add to
their Number, and any Five to be a Quorum.

RESOLVED,-That the following subjects be recommended for the consideration of the Committee:- 

 

1st, The Improvement or Alterations which the Sands require to render them a commodious Cattle Market. 

 

2nd, The most suitable situation for a Horse Market. 

 

3rd, The most proper place for Fat Cattle Market. 

 

4th, If any Alteration can, with convenience, advantage, and propriety, be made in the Times of holding Markets and Fairs. 

 

5th, If any additional Fairs and Markets appear necessary for Horses and Lean Cattle, and also the most proper times for a Market
for Fat Cattle. 

 

6th, The best means of carrying these Improvements into effect. 

 

RESOLVED,-That the Committee, if they see it proper, communicate with the EARL of LONSDALE, the DUKE of DEVONSHIRE, and the
CORPORATION of CARLISLE, through the medium of their respective Agents, and also with Mr. SMIRKE, to obtain a sanction to such
Improvements as may appear to them, on mature consideration, to be necessary. 

 

RESOLVED,-That a Subscription be now entered into to defray the Expences of Advertising, &c. &c. 

 

RESOLVED,-That Mr. JOHN STUDHOLME be appointed Secretary and Treasurer. 

 

RESOLVED,-That these Resolutions be Published in the Carlisle Patriot, Carlisle Journal, Cumberland Pacquet, and Dumfries Courier.
