THE THEATRE.—Our Theatre was opened on Monday evening, and there were performances every night during the week. On Tuesday evening a
Mr. BAKER, from the Haymarket Theatre, London, made his first appearance here in the character of Jeremy Diddler, in the excellent
Farce of Raising the Wind. Mr. BAKER had a most flattering reception, and he well deserved all the applause he received from the
numerous audience. We have never seen the needy, impudent, and lively Jeremy better pourtrayed. Mr. BAKER has a good figure, much
ease, and a very correct delivery; he also 'suited the action to the word.'—Mr. LANE, though not equal to EMERY and MALLINSON, in
the dialect of Yorkshire, was a very entertaining Sam. We know of no one superior to Mr. LANE in the half smothered laugh and rustic
sneer, which he never fails to heighten by an indescribable archness of face. In fact, a good performer in this line of acting,
always says as much in looks as in words.

On Saturday last, Edward FORSTER, of Rickergate, shopkeeper, was convicted for unlawfully shooting in the parish of Irthington on
the 12th and 19th days of August last, in two penalties of £5 each; and John SCOTT, of Brampton, spirit-merchant, was convicted for
the like offence in the parish of Bewcastle, on the 24th of August last, by Drs. LOWRY and HEYSHAM.

On the same day, Jane WYLIE, of Botchergate, single-woman, was committed to the House of Correction by Dr. LOWRY, for unlawfully
embezzling a quantity of cotton yarn, the property of Messrs. DIXON & Co. manufacturers; and Margaret BROWN, wife of Thomas BROWN,
of Newby, labourer, was committed to gaol by Dr. HEYSHAM, for feloniously stealing and taking away six yards and a half of printed
calico from the shop of Messrs. LITTLE and HESLOP, of the city of Carlisle, drapers.

About eight o'clock on Wednesday evening last, a person tolerably well dressed went into Mrs. CHIRNEY's, the sign of the Three
Crowns, in English Street, sat down in the parlour, and called for a pint of ale; he asked a Mr. JEWEL, who sells watches and
trinkets, what o'clock it was, and Mr. J. pulled out his watch and informed him of the hour. The stranger then proposed to purchase
a watch, on which Mr. J. went to his room on the other side of the lane where he kept his watches, &c.; and immediately after, the
stranger enquired of Mrs. CHIRNEY where Mr. J. was gone, and she pointed to the place. Mr. JEWEL returned in about three or four
minutes; the stranger, without purchasing a watch, left the room, and in about a quarter of an hour after Mrs. CHIRNEY's servant saw
the same person and four others, all well dressed, pass down the lane by Mr. J.'s room; this circumstance caused some suspicion, and
she took a candle, went up stairs, and found the room door broke open, but fortunately the thieves had not, from some reason or
other, an opportunity of effecting their purpose.

On Monday morning as Mr. Robert NORMAN, of the New Bank, in this City, was returning from Kirkandrews, on horseback, the horse fell
with him, by which his ancle was much injured. It is almost a miracle that his leg was not broken.

On Monday last, W. JOHNSTON, innkeeper, of the old Turk's Head lane, in this City, had the misfortune to turn his ancle out of
joint, while erecting his tent on the race-ground.

On Monday se'nnight, the Right Hon. Lord LOWTHER was elected Mayor of the Borough of Appleby, for the ensuing year.

We see it stated in a London paper that labourers are to be hired at our market cross at 4d. per day, without victuals! We stated a
fortnight ago that they were to be hired at 14d. and the London printers have made an improvement by leaving out the first figure!

The Rev. Joseph SHARPE, formerly of St. Bees, chaplain to his Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, has been appointed to the
Vicarage of Clent, in the county of Stafford and diocese of Worcester, on the presentation of the King.

The Prince Regent has been pleased to appoint James CLARKE, Esq. his Majesty's Attorney-General of the Isle of Man.

Saturday se'ennight, Robert CATTLE and Thomas CATTLEY, jun. Esqrs. were elected into the office of Sheriff of the city of York for
the ensuing year.

Sir Thomas BURDON is elected Mayor of Newcastle, and Thomas LOGGAN, Esq. Sheriff, for the ensuing year.
