Saturday 05 Oct 1816 (p. 3, col. 2-4)

Monday last, being the period for the annual change of the Civic Officers of this city and its liberties, George BLAMIRE, Esq. of
Suttle House, was chosen Mayor for the ensuing year, vice Sir J. D. A. GILPIN, who has filled the office during the last twelve
months with no little honor to himself, and to the satisfaction of the public. The following officers were also
elected:-Chamberlain, Mr. Robt. ALLISON; Sword-bearer, Mr. Robert PORTER; Mace-bearer, Mr. Joseph PEASCOD; Bailiffs, John Lowry
MULLENDER, and John SLACK; Coroners, R. RODFORD, and Edw. ARMSTRONG.

Between three and four o'clock the Mayor, with about one hundred friends, sat down to a good dinner at the Bush Inn: his Worship in
the Chair. The Right Hon. the Earl of Lonsdale was present, and took his seat at the right hand of the chief magistrate. After the
cloth was removed the following toasts, with various others, were given and drunk by the company with proper spirit:

The King-The Prince Regent-The Queen and Royal Family-The Duke of Wellington and the Army-The Duke of Clarence and the Navy-Lord
Exmouth-Rear Admiral MILNE-Captain Sir James BRISBANE-The Heroes of Waterloo-The Lord Lieutenant of the County of Cumberland-The
High Sheriff-The Members for the County-The Members for the City-The Duke of Devonshire-The Earl of Carlisle-Lord Lowther-Lord
Morpeth-The Members for the County of Westmorland-Lady Lonsdale-The Bonny Lasses of Cumberland-Success to the newly established
Cattle Markets-&c. &c.

The last toast was proposed by Thomas RAMSHAY, Esq. of Naworth Castle, who addressed a few words to the company. He said the Cattle
Markets had been happily established under the most flattering auspices, and he had no hesitation in saying that not only the city
of Carlisle, but the county of Cumberland, as well as the neighbouring counties, would be essentially benefited thereby. Carlisle
was in the best situation possible for such a mart, and if it was prosecuted under the patronage of the Noble Lord who was present,
and others who had influence, it must succeed to the satisfaction and advantage of all. The Noble Lord deserved thanks of all
concerned for the liberal encouragement which he had given to the undertaking; and he should not do justice to his feelings, nor to
the individuals concerned, were he not also to pay his tribute of applause to the very handsome manner in which the Corporation of
Carlisle had supported the measure.-(Applause.)

The Earl of Lonsdale immediately rose in reply. He said the little that he had been called to do towards the establishment of the
New Markets did not deserve the very handsome notice which had been taken of it. He was willing to hope, and indeed he had no doubt,
but the establishment would be productive of all those advantages which had been anticipated by Mr. RAMSHAY. He could only say that
he was willing, at any time, to render all the support in his power towards perfecting so desirable an end, or towards any other
plans which they had for their object, the good of the city of Carlisle, or the county of Cumberland. And before he sat down he also
begged to say, that there was another person, not then present, who was also willing to afford his assistance. His Lordship meant
the Duke of Devonshire, who, when left to think for himself, was always forward to do every thing that could be expected for this
city and its neighbourhood. His Lordship would therefore conclude with proposing the Noble Duke's health.-(Drunk with great
applause.)

In the course of the evening a number of songs were sung by different persons; one peculiarly appropriate by Mr. M'CREADY, the
Manager of our Theatre, was received with much eclat. The company separated about half-past ten o'clock.

The Quarterly Meeting of the Carlisle Diocesan Committee, in aid of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, holden yesterday
in the Town-hall, was respectably attended; the Lord Bishop of the Diocese in the Chair. Since the last Quarterly Meeting, the
following persons have been proposed to be members: Miss PALEY, Carlisle; Miss GARFORTH, Bush-Farm; Richard CUST, Esq. Carlisle; J.
D. B. DYKES, Esq. Dovenby-Hall; Thomas WYBERGH, Esq. Brayton-Hall; and Mr. John WATSON, Crosby.
