It is with considerable pleasure we inform our Readers, that a Bill has been brought in by Kirkman FINLEY, Esq. Member for Glasgow,
and read a first and second time in the House of Commons, for improving the Great Road from the City of Glasgow to the City of
Carlisle. As we understand no opposition will be made to its progress through either House of Parliament; and as Administration not
only sanction the measure with all their influence, but have, with laudable zeal and liberality, agreed to advance fifty thousand
pounds for the purpose of carrying the measure into execution, we have therefore no doubt that the Bill, though introduced from
unavoidable circumstances late in the season, will be passed into a law this Session. We are also certain that the Road, when
completed, will greatly tend to promote and encourage the important interests of agriculture, commerce, and manufactures, and
thereby prove of great national benefit, as it will considerably shorten the distance from Portpatrick and all the western parts of
Scotland to the City of Carlisle, and consequently to every part of England.

On Thursday morning, John POLLET, Wm. GREEN, Joseph SIMPSON, Benjamin LITTLE, Robert BIRD, and John BEANSON, confined in the second
and third cells of the gaol in this City, endeavoured to make their escape by breaking the hinges of the small door of the third
cell, and attempting to take out a large stone in the wall between the two cells. Morning arrived before they could accomplish their
work, and of course, they were detected. Measures have since been taken which will entirely preclude even a similar attempt in
future.

On Tuesday last, five women pretending to be soldiers' wives accompanied by eleven children were apprehended in this city, and
committed to gaol for attempting to impose on the Overseers of the Poor by means of forged passes. These forged passes have been
ordered to be transmitted to the War Office by the Magistrates.

On Saturday last, Robert BIRD was committed to our gaol by James STEEL, and John HARRISON, Esqrs. two of his Majesty's Justices of
the Peace for this county, charged with having on that day broke open the shop of John BRUNSKILL, of Whitehaven, and stealing
therefrom seventeen new shoes the property of the said John BRUNSKILL.

Yesterday morning a man named WHITE, made an attempt to commit suicide by cutting his throat, at the sign of the Cock, near
Whitehaven; but the knife which he used being very blunt, the wind-pipe remained uninjured, and the laceration has since been
dressed by a Surgeon. We are informed that WHITE is from Caldbeck.

Robert ATKINSON, miller, of Lambrig, was lately convicted of making malt, in a clandestine and illegal manner, by which practice he
has defrauded the excise of considerable sums of money, during the course of several years. The delinquent not being able to pay his
fine, has fled the country, and left a large family to be supported by the township of Lambrig.

A Singular Instance of Inattention.-The neighbours met lately at a house not ten miles from Hawkshead, to attend the corpse of an
infant to the grave. Some time after the procession had set off towards the Church, one of the children informed its mother that the
baby was still in the room, upstairs. The information was correct; for a careless servant whose place it was to have deposited the
corpse in the coffin, had directed the joiner to close the lid, without performing her part of the business. Upon discovering the
mistake, one of the family had to follow the company with the news of this oversight, a distance of two miles to the Church, but the
empty coffin was laid in the ground before the messenger arrived.
