The Earl of Lonsdale left Carlisle for Lowther on Tuesday night, from whence he set out on his return to London early on Wednesday
morning.

A meeting of the Cattle Market Committee will take place this day, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, at the Coffee House.

MASONRY.-Our readers will obserse [sic] by the Advertisement there will be a Provincial Grand Lodge holden in this City on the 5th
instant.
The last arch of the Old Bridge over the Eden, at the foot of this City, was taken down on Wednesday.
Fresh Herrings have been sold at a moderate price in this City during the week. We hope there will be soon a plentiful supply of
this useful fish.
The Magistrates and Peace Officers have been very active during the week in ridding the City and neighbourhood of vagrants who
infested it in great numbers.-The well known Nell CROSBY was sent off to Whitehaven, in order to be shipped for Ireland, and Susanna
FAROL, and Margaret VITCH were committed to our gaol; the former to be brought up at the next quarter sessions; the latter for one
month.
Isabella COATES, and Catherine SKINNER have also been committed by the Rev. R. MATTHEWS, for stealing a gown from a hedge at Wigton.
Margaret IRVING, a servant in the house of Lister ELLIS, Esq. of Bush Farm, near Longtown, is in custody in Carlisle gaol for having
robbed her Mistress of silver to the amount of eight shillings and six-pence. Mrs. ELLIS having frequently lost money, suspected
this girl, and on the present occasion marked a certain quantity of silver, and left her keys as if she had done so by accident. On
going again to the money, she found wanting the beforementioned sum, which was found in IRVING's box; who immediately confessed that
she had stolen it, by using the keys, and that she did it at the instance of a young man who has fled to Penrith. A warrant has been
issued for his apprehension, but he is still at large.
At Longtown Fair, on Thursday, there was rather a scanty shew of horses, and a dull sale,-consequently prices were low.
On Friday se'nnight, Mr. Robt. NICHOLSON, of Barton, a man universally respected, threw himself into the river at Pooley, a little
above the foot of Ullswater Lake, and was found the following day. Mr. N. has left a large family to lament his loss, and what is
rather remarkable it is only a few yards distant from the spot where his father terminated his existence in the same manner a few
years ago-verdict, lunacy.
A fine Sturgeon, weighing upwards of ninety pounds, was sold in Whitehaven market last week. It was caught in Wigton bay. Mr.
FORSTER, fishmonger, of this city, has also sold during the last week a Sturgeon equal in size to the preceding, and has now three
very large ones in his possession.
Last week, as some workmen were sinking a well for a pump, at Mr. Abel ASHBURNER's, the King's Arms Inn, in Egremont, after digging
more than seven yards, through earth which, to all appearance, had never before been moved, they discovered a quantity of
cow's-dung.-It is the astonishment of all who have seen the spot, by what means it came there.
A few days ago a spirit of insubordination was manifested by the workmen connected with the collieries on the river Wear, Durham,
but through the prompt and vigorous exertions of the Magistrates, aided by two troops of cavalry from Newcastle, order has been
restored and they have returned to their work.
In the Court of King's Bench on Monday, several of the Seamen implicated in the late riots at Shields, presented themselves, and
repentantly pleaded guilty to an indictment against them. They were all suffered to go at large upon their own recognizances for
future good behaviour.
A New Play, called the Oath, or, Love and Vengeance, founded on that part of the history of Spain when the Moors were in possession
of that kingdom, was acted, for the first time at any theatre, at Newcastle, on Monday Evening, the 20th ult. and very coldly
received. The Author is not generally known, but report states it to be the production of a Mr. SANDS, a writer of Novels, who died
in Newcastle some months ago.-This circumstance seemed to prevent the audience from expressing such marks of disapprobation as its
defects called for. It is not expected to be acted again.
Mr. HALL has obtained leave to bring a Bill into the House of Commons to prevent the destruction of Salmon.
Lately, at Bramly, in the parish of Brigham, a hen, with great assiduity and labour made herself a nest and laid a number of eggs
which she is now hatching; but such is the fate of all sublunary things, a cat forcibly lays claim to her new habitation, and in it
deposits her young kittens. As possession is a considerable point in law, and by altercation fearing lest their peace and mutual
harmony might be endangered and interrupted, they agreed in sharing the premises in the following manner,-that is to say, as often
as the hen has occasion to go abroad, Gramalkin [sic] undertakes the charge of her young ones, and sedulously employs the greatest
care for the preservation and Hatching of the eggs of her companion, and alternately, when Grimalkin absents herself from the place,
the important duty of tending the young kittens and the incubation of the eggs, devolves upon, and is faithfully discharged by the
attentive hen. The veracity of the above may be depended on.-Whitehaven paper.
