NOTICES IN NATURAL HISTORY.

-----

LUSUS NATURÆ.—A few days ago, at Paddonbeck, near Carlisle, a chicken was hatched, with four legs, the redundant ones crossing over
the back. The bird is in the possession of Wm. SINCLAIR, weaver there, and is alive and healthy.

TOADS.—In cutting a piece of timber, a few days ago, in Whitehaven, a live toad was found in the very heart of the wood, which was
perfectly sound, and had lain upon the ground many years.—More than three years ago, a gentleman in the neighbourhood of Glasgow put
a live toad into a small flower pot and sunk it two feet in the earth. It was not raised till lately, when the animal was found in
as good health as when covered up.—The toad was immediately returned to his prison.

REMARKABLE INSTANCE OF VEGETATION.—The butt of an ash tree, which supports a smith's anvil in a shop at Egremont, is (as it was last
year) again in full leaf.
