CENTRAL SCHOOL,
CARLISLE,
Under the Patronage of the Lord Bishop of the Diocese.
-----<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>-----
DR. BELL'S, or, as it has been called, the MADRAS System of Education, adopted in the CENTRAL SCHOOL at CARLISLE, is now making its
way through every part of England; and, where properly conducted, by dint of its superior excellence is superseding, almost to
exclusion, the various methods heretofore pursued. The City of Carlisle has to rejoice at the invention of this plan, in common with
multitudes of places, where manufactures are carrying on. For at length, by the benevolence of the public in contributing to the
Funds of the Central School, the Children of the whole City and Neighbourhood may receive, gratis, education in the soundest
religious principles, and in the elements of that plain and useful knowledge, which the good of the community, and the present as
well as the future comfort of the individuals themselves, so much require.
The Committee appointed for the management of the School have now the satisfaction of announcing, that, in consequence of the
improved demeanor and understanding which the Children educated for the three last years have so manifestly evinced, the plan has
been considerably extended: a larger School has been raised behind the West Wall of the City, capable of containing nearly a
Thousand Children. The Committee, therefore, most earnestly recommend to the inhabitants of Carlisle, and indeed to the County at
large, the protection of this well-tried, important, and valuable institution. If the introduction of manufactures, from the
indiscriminate concourse of persons which it brings together, has a natural tendency to weaken, if not destroy, all regard for good
principles, surely they who reap benefit from those manufactures, and all those good Christians who are sensible of the dangers
alluded to, will feel the necessity, not to say the duty, of endeavouring to counteract the pernicious effects which are obviously
produced from such a source.
The chief methods of accomplishing this are, the education and training of the younger part of this mixed and neglected assemblage.
These are by no means expensive, scarcely exceeding the cost of the usual establishments of common parochial Charity Schools, which
are so confined in their operation. Moderate Annual Contributions will give stability to this friendly design: and, perhaps if need
be, will still farther increase it, to the honour and advantage of the County of Cumberland, and most especially of the City of
Carlisle.
The School has to boast of many valuable friends, most disinterestedly and most anxiously bent upon accomplishing this blessed
purpose: and the Committee hope that their example, so clearly indicating a sense of religious duty, will operate powerfully, as it
ought, in engaging the general concurrence and assistance of every lover of religion and good order. May the blessing of God attend
them in their work!
By order of the Committee,
W. T. BRIGGS, Secretary.
