BIRTH.
The wife of a notary, at Nogent-sur-Seine (France) was safely delivered, on the 22d March, of five children, who are all doing well.
MARRIED.
On Saturday, in this city, Mr. Isaac SCOTT, of Brisco-hill, to Mrs. ARMSTRONG, landlady of the Wooden Walls, Brisco; being the third
admirer whom the buxom widow has entrapped in the toils of wedlock.

In Whitehaven, on the 29th ult. Mr. Richard BOWMAN, shoemaker, of Mockerkin, in Loweswater, to Miss Hannah BUSHBY.

DIED.
At the Howard Arms Inn, Brampton, on the 5th inst. in the 37th year of his age, Mr. Richard SMIRKE, of Upper Fitzroy-street, St.
Pancras parish, London-after a short illness, occasioned by a violent cold, caught from sitting some hours on the ground, then in a
humid state (probably after perspiring profusely), while he was ardently occupied in drawing, and in copying the antique
inscriptions on the rocks adjacent to the river Gelt.-A more melancholy and painful instance of sudden mortality has seldom
occurred; and furnishes survivors with an impressive lesson of the great uncertainty of human life.-His friends, who best knew him,
have cause deeply to lament departed worth and genius; while they adore with resignation the inscrutable mandates of heaven. Early
in life he discovered a brilliant genius, united to a solid understanding; and by indefatigable assiduity, the horizon of his mental
perception and intellectual powers exhibited in manhood an enlargement and expansion, where lively traits of interesting knowledge
were happily portrayed.-He had made an uncommon proficiency in historical painting; and all his productions, in that beautiful art,
discovered a maturity of judgment, combined with a chasteness of style and classical purity of taste, that uniformly distinguishes
native genius, improved by judicious cultivation. He delighted in the study of chemistry, and his laborious private studies, devoted
to that science, produced an extensive and accurate acquaintance with it, in all its modern discoveries and improvements. He was an
elegant classical scholar, and the latter part of his life appears to have been principally applied to historical researches in
British antiquities. He loved privacy and retirement, though naturally social and communicative in intercourse with select
friends.-Modest genius, finely delineated by GRAY, was literally exhibited in his amiable deportment.
"Along the cool sequestered vale of life,
"He kept the noiseless tenor of his life [correction in next week's paper - way, not life]."
This article is written as a tribute of respect and affection to his memory by a friend, who was formerly his tutor.-Grammar School,
