On Monday, the workmen began to take down the Scotch Gates, the removal of which will be a very material accommodation to that part
of the city.

We refer the inhabitants of Carlisle and neighbourhood to a Petition in another part of our Paper against the proposed alteration of
the Corn Laws. The public lately performed their duty in spurning at the continuation of the Property Tax; but bad as that measure
was, its operation was but as the small dust of the balance, in comparison with the incalculably mischievous consequences which,
from the very nature of things, must result from destroying our manufacturing and commercial pre-eminence by forcibly enhancing the
price of bread.—This is no party matter: it is the truly loyal who oppose their fronts to what would sap the very foundation of
national prosperity, and throw into the scale of our rivals that preponderance which we have so long enjoyed.

We are desired to state, that Colonel SALKELD, Acron-Bank, has not been appointed one of the Knight Companions of the Military Order
of the Bath, as had been currently reported.

The turn-over of the prisoners in our gaol took place yesterday, from the late to the present High Sheriff (W. P. JOHNSTON, Esq.);
at which time the late and the present High Sheriffs each gave to the gaoler 2gs. to be distributed among the prisoners, for which
they beg to return their sincere thanks.

The first meeting of the Female Bible Association of Maryport (mentioned in our Journal as about to commence at the beginning of the
new year) was holden on Saturday last; and from the returns it appeared that the number of subscribers for the

                    Town of Maryport were        331

                    Village of Flimby                    27

                    Village of Cannonby               14—372

and the first monthly collection, including some small donations, amounted to £13 5s. 9d. This simple statement speaks more than
pages, and will, we trust, be the means of inducing the ladies of other towns in this county to promote similar associations among
the labouring classes, whose temporal wants may be enquired into and relieved by the same kind of superintendance which is thus
directed to the supply of their spiritual necessities.

The Royal Cumberland Militia were to be disbanded at Whitehaven yesterday.

We observe in a Morning paper of the 20th inst. not less than seven actions in the Court of Exchequer, for the recovery of penalties
from persons vending French silk shawls, gloves, shoes, &c. to the amount of many thousand pounds.—We trust these convictions will
prevent, in a great measure, a recurrence of this description of smuggling—so injurious to the manufacturer of our own country, and
detrimental to the fair trader.

The inhabitants of the city of Durham have resolved to petition Parliament against the proposed corn-bill. Their petition on this
occasion suggests the propriety of landlords reducing their rents as the only practicable relief to the farmer.

The Prince Regent has appointed Le Gendre STARKIE, Esq. of Huntroyd, Sheriff of the County Palatinate of Lancaster.

Two men have been committed to York castle, on a charge of wounding and robbing on the highway Mr. WILKINSON, of Scorton, near
Catterick, of £45. The ruffians were Mr. W.'s own servants.

A few days ago was launched from the building yard of Messrs. Adam WOOD and Co. Maryport, a fine new copper-bottomed vessel, called
the JANE, built for Capt. RICKARDS.

The fleet for the West Indies, which sailed from Cork on the 15th ult. under convey of the Tigre, was spoken on the 31st ult. in
lat. 34. 13. long. 15. 10. The fleet reached the latitude of Madeira on the 26th, without one vessel out of 181 having separated;
but strong westerly winds from that time caused 19 sail to part, and prevented their making Madeira.
