On Tuesday last, our worthy and independent Member, Mr. FAWCETT, presented to the House of Commons the Carlisle Petition against the
renewal of the Property Tax. Ministers finding from the unequivocal voice of the people, that this obnoxious tax would not be
endured, have prudently consigned it to merited oblivion, which circumstance rendered it unnecessary for our Member to state to the
House the rigorous manner in which the tax was levied in many instances on the inhabitants of this city and its vicinity.
On Saturday evening, a man of the name of STEVENSON, an inmate of Brampton poor house, who had come here to see his wife who lives
in the neighbourhood,unfortunately fell over the declivity at the west walls, and received so much injury that he expired on
Friday.The frequency of such accidents, we are glad to state, will be prevented so soon as the parapet wall, intended to go the
whole range of that dangerous place, be completed.
On Monday, Tuesday , and Wednesday, the Royal Cumberland Militia arrived here from Scotland, in three divisions. They will be
disbanded at Whitehaven, whither they marched on Wednesday, Thursday, and yesterday, by the rather unusual route of
Hesket-New-Market, &c.
Petty depredations still continue in the neighbourhood. On the night of Saturday, or morning of Sunday last, the hen house of L.
SMITH, Esq. at the foot of Stanwix Bank, was plundered of its feathered inmates.
The Rev. James METCALFE, of Appleby, is elected master of the free grammar-school of Kirkby Stephen; and the Rev. George WHITEHEAD
(eldest son of the Rev. R. WHITEHEAD, of Ormside) succeeds to the curacy of Kirkby Stephen.
NEW SHERIFFS.The pricking [sic!] of the Sheriffs for the present year took place at the Council held at Carlton House on Monday
last.The following are those for the Northern Counties:CumberlandW. P. JOHNSTON, of Walton House, Esq.; NorthumberlandG. BAKER,
of Stanton, Esq.; YorkshireW. GARFORTH, of Wigginthorpe, Esq.
The Assizes for York are fixed for the 11th March, and for Lancaster the 25th.
The celebrated stallion Beningbrough, rising 24 years old, the property of Mr. DINSDALE, of Middleham, near Richmond, died there on
the 7th inst.
Two horse-stealers have been apprehended at Liverpool, who formed part of a gang that in the course of three or four months have
stolen horses to the value of more than £700.
A few days since three young women were convicted in the penalty of 5s. each for being drunk and disorderly at Salfordone of whom
was exposed in the stocks, pursuant to the statute.
Since our last, three persons have been committed to Lancaster castle,one of them for a rape and robbery, and the other for a
highway robbery.
The Seaton, PEARSON; Margaret, PILKINGTON; and Mary Fell, WALLACE, belonging to Workington, arrived at Barbadoes the 14th Dec. last;
and
The Barton, SCOTT, of same place, at Demerara.
LAUNCHES.Yesterday week, from Messrs. BROCKLEBANK's building-yard, Whitehaven, a fine coppered vessel, called the JAMAICA.On
Saturday last, from the building-yard of Messrs. Kelsick WOOD, PEILE, & Co. Workington, a beautiful copper bottomed vessel, called
the LEVIATHAN.And on the same day, from Messrs. W. WALLACE & Co.'s building-yard at Workington, a fine copper bottomed vessel,
called the MARY ANN, built for Capt. George RITSON.
On the 20th ult. the William, BARROW, from Whitehaven for St. Michael's, was captured and burnt by the Rein Deer, American
privateer.
Several of our merchantmen have been carried into French ports by American privateers.
